DEAD: Amazon.com has the HD-A3 HD DVD player plus 10 free HD DVDs for $179.98 shipped.

wow... i got in on the best buy deal, but this one is even better in a way because there is no tax for a lot of us. (i would have saved $19 anyway).

Not a bad deal at all, but their selection for the in-house "pick 3" list isn't all that great. But it's certainly better than the pick 5 mail-in list. And like hans007 said, you save on tax (mine was about $11 bucks on the BB deal a few weeks ago).

Toshiba is really stepping up with cheap players. I was kind of worried at first because Toshiba is primary if not the only manufacturer, but they seem to have plenty of manufacturing capacity to satisfy demand and prices are way better than that of BR camp.

On players ya, prices for HD-DVD are better but it seems BR gets a new buy one get one free movie sale every week.

I like how that FAQ states that there are 7 studios in support of Blu-ray but only 3 for HDDVD, but some of the Blu-ray studios are owned wholly by others in the same list, and the HDDVD subsidiary-studios are casually omitted.

(from the link posted by eruss)
seven of the eight major movie studios (Warner, Paramount, Fox, Disney, Sony, MGM and Lionsgate) have released titles for Blu-ray, whereas HD-DVD only has support from three major movie studios (Warner, Paramount and Universal).
All of those listed are independent of one another, only one that might not be considered independent is MGM, but it is not wholly owned by any of the others (joint venture between Comcast, Sony, and a private equities group).

A good deal, however I'm looking for A2. I have old receiver without HDMI and A3 provides downgraded audio stream on optical out. I hope to get A2 on BF. A2 is also faster.

I noticed CC shows those HD-A2 players in stock once again. They might pop up on BF there, just a thought. I got one and I prefer it to the A3. I like the hidden buttons on the front, too.

A2 is faster, but not by much. A second or two. They're both a bit slow to boot up.

Info from a thread at AVSforum:
I have a Toshiba HD-A2, A3, and A30 in front of me. I thought I'd share my comparison finding. This mattered to me, perhaps it will to others:

With a disc in each player and power turned off, each takes the following boot times:

--until disc is read and "hd-dvd logo" appears on screen:
A2 (firmware 2.5): 32 sec.
A3 & A30 (firmware 1.0): 50 sec.
A3 & A30 (firmware 1.1): 33 sec.

--Additional time until first screen of disc is played:
A2 (firmware 2.5): 16 sec.
A3 & A30 (firmware 1.0): 25 sec.
A3 & A30 (firmware 1.1): 30 sec.

----UPDATE:
The 2.7 A2 firmware speeds boot time about 2-3 seconds from v.2.5.
The 1.3 A3/30 firmware speeds boot time about 5 seconds from v.1.1.

These numbers are very consisted and can be repeated with numerous discs.
Basically, the A2 is (and remains) considerably faster than the 3rd gen.

----------
NEXT: DISC READ PROBLEMS

I have 5 Netflix discs with minor scratches. 3 of the discs get stuck (stop & gives read error 408bc504) on the A-3/A-30 at the exact same spots each time. --However, the A2 plays through all discs without any problem whatsoever. --This can be repeated 4-5 times back and forth with exactly same consistent results between the 2 players---
Conclusion: the A2 with 2.5 firmware has been tweaked to such a point that it reads through problem discs extremely well - quite impressive actually.

UPDATE: The 1.3 A3/A30 firmware corrects some read problems, though still has more read errors than A2.

I thought I read somewhere that these players can be converted to 1080p output with updated/hacked firmware - true?

nakedfrog, I wonder if they are using the latest firmwares for each device. I recently tested a new A3 beside my A2 and ancient A1 and didn't notice much difference in load times, except for the A1, which is slower than snot.

Amazon just lowered their price for the Toshiba A3. You get the player and 10 HD DVDs for $159.98.

Wow! Better deal than the mentioned Sears sale.

The only problem is, it's gonna take awhile before you receive it.

Shipping is 3 to 4 weeks from now.

edited the op. thanks.

Might as well re-edit it cause it's out of stock.

EDIT: Nevermind that, you have to select Amazon.com as a seller on the right hand side. However, the price is $180.
