Dead Again: Seagate Backup Plus 4TB USB 3.0 Desktop External HD $139.99 Free Ship

I bought the 3TB version of this @Office Depot using a 30% off coupon a few weeks ago. $104 out the door -- opened it to find a nice ST3000DM003 drive inside. Installed it in my daughter's computer b/c she was running out of drive space (thanks to Steam). 🙂

I put her Samsung F3 1TB drive back in the enclosure -- everything works fine.

Spinejam, can you give any input as to the heat issues a handful of reviews stated?

Is it really a lottery as to whether you get a 5900 RPM or 7200RPM....?

I copied close to 925 GB of data onto the replacement F3 1TB drive inside the enclosure and it did get warm -- nothing extreme though. I can't comment on the Seagate 3TB drive temps inside the enclosure b/c I extracted it as soon as I got it. 🙂

It definitely appears like the 4TB external's are more of a gamble re: 7200 rpm vs 5900 rpm. I didn't want to chance being stuck w/ a 5900 rpm drive, that's why I went w/ the 3TB enclosure.

And I don't want to chance being stuck w/ a 7200 rpm drive, that's why I'm afraid of this deal. I'm looking for some low-power storage drives.

in for 1. not quite as cheap per TB as the 2 TB hitachi i got in antediluvian times at microcenter, but close enough to the 3 TB for $100 i'd set as my mark.

I'm in for 1 as well. I have an entire storage array with redundancy that I can backup once to this and store this thing for added peace of mind 🙂

So does removing the drive void the warranty? If so that explains the cheaper price.

Typically it does. The serial number of the drive is recorded as an external drive so if you try to RMA it, and it isn't in the enclosure, your warranty is not valid.
