*****This is not dead yet**** I just went to a local staples and bought 2 drives for $186.xx (around 2:30 PM today)!

To do this, you will have to call around to a couple different staples locations in your area. I suggest using the website's store locator as it has more locations than the phonebook. Call them up, and ask to speak to the manager. Ask him (her) about their pricematch policy: whether they will pricematch a rebate when it is a best buy rebate, not a manuf. rebate. I found one store where the manager accepted this.

Print out best buy's page for the hd as evidence, (LINK), then you must add it to your cart to see the real price. Print this out with the $179.99 price. Now you have your evidence. (Maybe make sure they will allow a printout as valid proof, if not, call some local Best Buy's in your area that have it in stock).

When you go to the store, get the drive and bring it to the checkout desk. Tell them you want to price match to best buy, and show them your proof. This is the point also where you would want to present them with the 5 digit coupon code (which I can't mention on this forum, maybe google it) for discount of 30 off 100 for one drive or 50 off 200 for both drives. The lady at the desk had some suspicion about that. She said you're supposed to have the actual coupon, but I just looked real innocent and she let me use it, so YYMV (Your mileage may vary, for those of you who were wondering what that meant, ...like me).

So now I'm two harddrives richer all thanks to the help from this forum.

TOMORROW IS THE LAST DAY!!!! HURRY!

couple of questions about this drive. I picked up the one that says 20% faster on it, those are the 8mb right? The staples salesperson was telling me that the drives labled "20% faster" are older then the ones labeled 33% faster (2mb cache)

The drives w/ 8 mb cache have a blue sticker w/ the wordings "up to 33% Faster with Ultra ATA/133" . On the UPC code side there should be a "P6Y3" near the Average Access Time".

So, 20% is 2 mb cache and 33% is 8 mb cache.

Tried to PM w/ Staples yesterday vai telephone, but the CSR "Lory" wanted to call and verify stock availability. She couldn't get through. Went to my local BB & verified that they had 2 of the 120GB 8mb cache drives avialable. SKU# 4816122, none of the 5168855.

Tempted to use my 10% off peripherals BB coupon. $ 179.99 - 10%coupon + tax = $175.76 - $60 MIR + $.37 stamp = $116.13. Got two of these when BB was PM'ing CompUSA for $99.99. I have to try again later and hopefully get a better CSR.

Man..I forget off-hand, but the 8MB say "Ultra" and are triangular shaped and gold/black colored. There are 2 other versions, blue/white and red/yellow/blue. IIRC the blue/white ones have a chance to be 8MB platters inside. There's a code on the UPC that indicates the type inside, 4 digits "P6Y3". If it says that, you've got the 8 gigger.

"As we all know, Staples will price match rebates if they have no competing rebate of their own, which is the case here. :D "

I cant get them to PM to the rebate at my B&M for the life of me. Is there a document thats says they'll price match rebates? And if not I'd be glad to pay one of my AWESOME AND GIVING anandtech comrades a little extra to pick me one up :D... TIA

A$$hole staples sent me the wrong drive. a 40 gig ata133 drive instead of the 120, in addition, they charged me the ful $199 for it. Invoice says 120G drive though. I think I'm going to explode!!! Any idea what I should do?

Just to clear up some confusion, if your box says 20% faster/ultra series on a gold /black label, it is a 8MB/7200rpm/ata133. Per Maxtors web site, the 8MB cache buffer gives you up to 20% faster performance, the ultra ata/133 interface gives you up to 33% faster data transfer rates. This is the fluid drive. Please check the site for Diamond Max Plus 9 120GB ata/133. I don't work for Maxtor, just tired of the misinfo. :)

first try calling them and let them know what happened and see what they say. Try there and see where it leads you.

BS. Call them back ASAP. This is their fvck up, they make it right...period. Tell them you want the correct drive, cross-shipped. You will send your package back return to sender. If they refuse to do so, tell them you will be issuing a stop payment through your CC company until the issue is resolved. Demand satisfaction, don't settle for less.

I went to Staples today and one of the store would price match best buy's price, but the manager will not let me apply the $20 off $100 coupon afterward. I called 1-800-STAPLES twice, the first time, the lady said that Staples will honor coupons after price match. The second time i called, another lady said that it's all up to the manager to decide. The first lady gave me a number to call and complain 1-800-338-0252 but the office is only open during weekdays. Anyone encounter this BS? And the Staples number that i called said they are out of stock, Bummer. Can anyone tell me how i would do this online and where do i go to chat with a customer service person?

So you didn't pick up the drive to save the $20? Even at PM + 110%, you save considerably. You get the drive for about $112+tax, with no rebates to wait on. All BB's in my area are now OOS on this drive, so its gonna be near impossible to get this deal done.

You can go online, you just need to go to check out or do a product view of the item and you should see a CSR chat icon in the upper right hand corner. I'm not sure if the online CSR option is available on weekends. This deal ends today as it is the last day BB offers the drive for $119 AR.

Got mine but:

I started the day by calling local BB. On hold 55 minutes, then click click, ... if youd like to make a call blah blah. Called again and hit customer service #. On hold 17 minutes then click click (you know the rest...).

So after more than 1 hour on phone/hold and being hung up on 2 times I said f*ck it and drove to local Staples.

2 drives left on shelf, looked at side panel and it was the 2mb version. Set it down and picked up last one and ching ching, 8mb P6Y3.

Whoever was in Springfield, VA Staples at 6pm Saturday and snagged that other drive after I put it down (you got hosed).

Now to test the PM checkout phase.

With printouts of BB and Staples webpage in hand, I told in-store CSR that I called 800 staples and they said "since it's a BB MIR only that they would honor the after rebate price". Then I said "I tried to order over phone but since BB online is outta stock, 800 staples could not sell me the drive, BUT I could go to local store and purchase at that price".

Staples in-store CSR rang up the drive and said 5 digit coupon code hade to be physically present to be used.

I am confused about the PM policy and didnt want to argue with the girl so I signed and got the hell outta there. My receipt looks like this:

--
1 MAXTOR 120GB 7200R 199.98
110% Price Match Guarantee $129.98 -77.00
Reason 12
Form of Proof - 06
SUBTOTAL 122.98
Standard Tax 4.50% 5.53
TOTAL $128.51
--

Is that right ?? Should it be $20 + cheaper ??

If I get a hold of an actual coupon can I take it back to get the additional $10 off $100 ?

Anyways my first PM attempt was a 95% SUCCESS :)

GeekFreak,

The BB price is 119.99AR

The pricematched price should be 199.98 - $87.99 (PM). = 111.99 +Tax.

She overcharged you by $10.99. (looks like she PM'ed it to 129.98, not to 119.99). Go back and complain, though I'm not sure if it's worth the hassle to ya, after all, at least now you dont have to deal with the MIR.

Munchies,

The main problem with that is that it is a Fry's store price. It's 139.99AR online w/ outpost.com.. Plus, Staples doesnt sell any Western Digital drives AFAIK. Might be able to get Circuit City to PM it, though (Which I was considering).

Yep, she overcharged you on the PM price. Should be 119.99, 111.99 or so after the 10%. Then with a $15 off $75 you coulda gotten that down to around $96.99 + Tax. I don't think you can get the coupon now, but you could go back for that other $8 + tax. Not sure if its worth the risk tho :)

CC may not PM it if you don't have a local Fry's. If you bring in the web price for Outpost, you pay the price from outpost. Still a good deal, but CC has no coupons to make it sweeeeeeter.....

West Coasters have a few hours left...this deal is dead on the East Coast.

Two days after I bought the Maxtor 120GB/8MB/ATA133 drive at Best Buy for $180 minus $60 rebate = $120, I went back with a 10%-off coupon from Sports Illustrated and did an exchange (i.e., re-buy) which put another $18 in my pocket. Final price = $102 + sales tax.

Steve

Edit: Oh, and I bought ten of those demo DVDs for $.01 apiece, just for the dust jackets.
