Dead 9800 Pro?

Nebor

Lifer
So I come home to find the little orange light on on my monitor. I try to restart, and get nothing. Hrmm. So since I can hear the hard disks spin up, I assume it's the video card, and pull it out of there. I take the geforce4 out of my other comp, and try the 9800 pro. The Arctic Cooling VGA Silencer fan makes an atrocious noise, and the monitor shows nothing.

I take off the heatsink, clean it up, put one some fresh TIM, and put it back in my main rig. Again, horrible fan noise. This time I stick my finger in the fan, only to discover that for all the noise it's making, it's barely moving. So here's my theory: VGA Silencer Fan goes down, fry's 9800 pro, Nebor cry's because he just ordered $1000 worth of suspension parts for a project car, Nebor goes and buys a new video card tommorow? I'm guessing that Arctic Cooling doesn't give a damn if their fan gave out and killed my card?

The card wasn't overclocked, and was running in a well ventilated case. I can't make the fan go at a normal speed, or stop making the horrible noise. Advice?

Those are some interesting theories guys.

Anyways, I guess I'm just gonna go to Fry's and get a 6800 GT for $350. Good deal?

I recieved a reply from Arctic Cooling. I was told that since they have no facilities in the United States, they could not uphold their warranty, and that I should consult the retailer from whom I purchased the item. Now that's service!

*crosses fingers and hope his VGA Silencer on his 9800P doesn't die*

I just gave my 9800NP to my brother, and I picked up a 9800P that runs at XT speeds for cheap from the FS/FT forum. I'd be really pissed if my 9800P died because of fan failure.

Actually, I use ATI Tool to underclock my 9800P to 200/200 when I'm only using the desktop. I've got a 3D/game profile setup so that it gets OC'ed to 420/365 when the game executables are started. I wonder if underclocking would prevent card death in the case that the fan on the Silencer died?

The best part was when Arctic Cooling slapped me in the face from across the atlantic. I mean, expected that they'd say the video card wasn't covered, but to say they couldn't cover the warranty on their own product? They really exceeded my expectations.
