HelpDesk is not designed to teach you how to build a web site. HelpDesk is for you to get problems resolved that are due to configuration errors in our servers, outages, service interruptions, or maintenance tasks that you cannot complete due to security issues.
CGI
We will not debug nor repair errors in cgi scripts. We have verified that every server we host does properly serve cgi scripts. We do not support the addition of third-party modules. If you want to upload binaries yourself and try to get them to work, that's okay with us unless it adversely affects the server or your neighbors, but we cannot assist you with this. If there's a module available in rpm format that we can install to assist your scripts we will install those modules but we will not support them. If a module is not available in rpm format or we determine a module is not appropriate for our server environment then we will not install it. Installation of modules is not deemed a support issue and will be done as time permits.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
At this time we do not limit what cgi scripts you can install. But getting them to work is your responsibility, not ours, unless we have a particular configuration issue that prevents a simple script like servercheck.cgi to run. We do reserve the right to disable cgi that is overloading the servers or presents a security risk to the server. In the case of security risks, if we determine via our log sniffers that a cgi script is accessing files outside it's realm or domain access, all domain accounts associated with the offending script will be suspended without notice.
EMAIL
We will verify that your email works. We cannot help with issues with a particular email client program (i.e. Outlook, Outlook Express, Eudora, Pegasus, etc). POP3 and SMTP mail will be checked by support staff to determine that the server is processing the mail properly. Your method of retrieving mail is up to you. We give you the server tools, you handle the client tools. Webmail is available either in IMP or SquirrelMail form. We do not support modifications to SquirrelMail or IMP. If we can log in via Webmail and send and receive mail via your account then our support ends there. If you wish to install third party IMAP mail systems thats okay, we just don't support it.
WEB
We do not support .htaccess files. We allow them, but it is up to you to determine the proper format and syntax.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
We do not support modifications to http configuration files to process web services over and above the presentation of HTML, PHP or CGI. You may or may not be able to modify the http configuration via .htaccess but it is not supported. Our allowed directive policy is pretty liberal.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
On some servers subdomain patches have been installed to allow the administrative user to create unlimited subdomains under their primary domain. We do not support it, but will install it if necessary. If it doesn't work for you we can remove it on servers where it is removable.
PHP
We will not debug nor repair open_basedir errors. Under PHP open_basedir is simply a method to limit what files PHP can open. We will not remove those limits. If you are receiving open_basedir errors then either the file you are attempting to open doesn't exist, or it exists outside of the realm in which we allow access.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Some PHP script packages require the removal of safe_mode in order to read files outside of the user/group that the PHP system is running as. We will replace safe_mode with open_basedir if necessary (for instance Gallery requires this). Note that this is only if you are getting safe_mode errors. If you are getting open_basedir errors then safe_mode is off, see the above paragraph.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
To clarify, we have two operating environments for PHP, safe_mode or open_basedir. You will not have both. safe_mode works for 99% of PHP scripts. open_basedir is only necessary for that 1% of PHP scripts that require accessing files outside the user/group the PHP/Apache engine is running as.
JAVA
We do not support Java. We provide it on some servers but we do not support it. If you need a particular configuration item added we will add it if you give us the complete syntax of the item and where it is supposed to be added.
We must depend on you, the Java user, to be fluent in Java and it's configuration, execution and management because frankly we aren't.
ASP
We do not support ASP.
SHELL ACCESS
We do not offer Telnet. We do not officially offer SSH. We do not support SSH. Some SSH accounts exist for special circumstances. We may or may not discontinue them at any time.
FRONTPAGE
We offer FrontPage extensions but cannot support them. We have determined that for a relatively simple web site FrontPage works fine under Unix. For more complex sites Unix is not the platform FrontPage was designed to operate on.
We can remove FrontPage extensions and add FrontPage extensions, that is about the limit of our support ability. We can create an account for you on an Ensim server if you are having problems with FrontPage on a Plesk server. It appears FrontPage is more stable under the Ensim environment. FrontPage is a Microsoft product and they are the ones to contact for support issues. (

FTP
We will verify that we can log into your site via FTP. We can verify that we can transfer files to/from your site via FTP. We do not support individual FTP client programs.
MYSQL
We provide a MySQL shared server for handling database access. A MySQL shared server is one in which there is one MySQL server for the entire hosting server. This means that your favorite database name may already be taken.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
On the Ensim servers if you wish to use MySQL via CGI we have to install a driver for you (PHP is already covered). The Plesk servers are already configured for MySQL via CGI.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
We do not offer Grant access to the server, in other words you can have only one username/password per database. We do not support the usage of MySQL services outside the localhost environment. We can verify that your username/password is valid for a database. We can verify that the MySQL server is up and functioning properly. We can import large database dumps for you. We cannot help you install a forum or assist with database errors over and above errors caused by the server.
DNS
Some of you prefer to user your own DNS servers to route for your domain. That's okay, but understand we don't support it. If your nameservers at the domain registrar point to Dixie's nameservers and you have a routing problem, by all means get us a support ticket and let us know. If you do your own DNS we will assume you know what you're doing and can't support your routing issues. If we move a server we take advantage of the fact that our DNS servers are answering for your domain so we can update them in a manner to reduce the downtime to a minimum. If you route your own DNS then you will not be able to take advantage of our changes and will have to wait until the new IP addresses are posted.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You can get the most recent IP addresses for our servers at the Dixiesys Domain Checker

Most of the issues submitted to HelpDesk have already been answered either via the forums or our FAQ here. We want to keep HelpDesk available with timely responses by eliminating support tickets that have answers available with some searching. There are very knowledgeable people on the forums who are happy to help with issues above and beyond the issues we support in HelpDesk.
The bottom line is that there are many services available to you. We will help keep your Mail, Web, and FTP services running but the way in which you use them is up to you. Services available in addition to that are provided for your benefit but not supported. There's a difference between offered and supported. We cannot support every computer configuration nor software configuration. We will try to offer FAQs where issues seem to come up frequently but we can't offer FAQs on every subject and we don't guarantee that a particular issue can be resolved with a particular FAQ because of the fluid nature of web hosting.
