I just got back from the CompUSA in Minnetonka and was able to pre-pay for a 6800GT at the 30% off price, so the total was 279.99 + tax. They didn't know the exact date they would be getting them in.

Can anyone list the locatations of stores that are doing pre-pays? I argued with the general manager at the store in Memphis for about an hour to no avail.

I talked to my store too. They said there is no such thing as a prepay to reserve in-store specials. Anyone that claimed to do it please send me a copy of your receipt so I can show them.

The general manager just told me the item must be in stock in order to take advantage of the 30% off. And it sounds like it won't be until another week and a half when cards arriving. (Phoenix, AZ area)

As tempting as this seems, I think I'm going wait for a PCI Express version.

Why?

Because my next upgrade is going to be big. At least I hope so. I'll probably fold and order an AGP model online if I can get a good price on it. I'd really like to get PCI-Express, BTX, and 64 bit all in one fell swoop, but I highly doubt I'll have such luck.

PCI-E will also allow for http://SLISLI down the road. BTX may not be well accepted.

No, it never was in stock online. It went directly from Coming Soon to Sold Out.

I like the idea of BTX. It simplifies the user's part in cooling. But like you said, it may not be well received, so I'm probably going to wait before I make any big purchases just so I can see how things play out.

The laptop was a freebie from a few years ago and I ended up only paying 67.59 for my new card!

The funny thing is that a manager helped me out and said, "wow, I think I'll have to get one of these myself... I sure hope CompUSA doesn't go bankrupt cause of this!" :D Next thing I know there are about 3 more employees around the register thinking about buying cards too.

does anyone have any details on the laptop trade in?

There's the info for the laptop trade-in program. The great thing is that they base the trade-in amount on MHZ and not the type of processor. Great if you have an old system, but not too good if you have a newer one. Either way, it was a great way to dump a old laptop that I got for free.

How did you trade in a laptop? I have an old P3-400 laptop that I would like to get rid of.

I am sure compusa will get the cards in stock the day AFTER the coupon expires.

Basically, you just bring it in along with any accessories/parts. I think the power adapter is the only main requirement. You give the system to their "techs" and they run it through a series of tests and determine wether or not they can accept the trade-in. Afterwards they make out a gift card that you can spend on anything you want.

Heck, they deny "return/rebuy" at my local CUSAs... I think you're either being taken for a ride or just lucky if they let you "preorder" it.

Nice I live 5 minutes away from that store. Was it a hassle to get it? I called and they told me I couldn't prepay.

I just called an order a 6800 GT no problem. I am 150 miles from the closest COMPUSA and the guy said no problem I got it for 279.99 + 8.50 shipping no tax because I bought in NH where there is no sales tax and wasn't charged it for VT where I live because there are no Comp USA's. w00t I have no idea when they will have them in stock though :( I am thinking of canceling my order and getting a Ultra though :) hehe Probably not though. The GT should fit my needs and I will use the rest of the money I saved for games other parts ect.

Which store in NH did you buy from?

I just checked my local CompUSA here in northern california. The person in charge of ordering/manager said that I couldn't pre-order in the store but only online, however, the 30% off can't be applied to online orders. I asked when they expect shipments in the store, he just put his arms up, shook his head and said, "I don't know". I think he was lying though. I'm going to call some other CompUSA's and check back on that store on the assumed ship date of July 1st.
