Dead 6600GT?

For some reason now my 6600GT refuses to play any type of 3D application (Benchmarks or games). It will start the application and will run for a few seconds but then the video feed stops and the computer freezes and I have to reboot.

I tried reinstalling windows and all that with fresh clean drivers etc. but it's doing the same thing.

I have two suspicions. Could it be the fact that I installed ATI tool to check for artifacts that's causing this? Or would a dying power supply cause this behavior? (now that I think about it this started happening after a power outage over the weekend... I wonder if that broke something....)

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

try the video card in another computer
when did it start to happen?
what were you doing right before this happened?

I was just about to start watching a movie when the power in the house shut off. I haven't been able to play games since last Sunday night.

I don't have another comptuer to test the card out in other then my computer at work. I do have 2 Quadro 4's at home I can throw in there to make sure it's not another part of the computer causing the problem...

hmmmmmmmm..power surge maybe? I read a similar story in this forum of this guy lost his 6600GT due to a power surge.

yea....make sure it's not another part of your computer that's damaged

but if your 6600gt's really dead...how can it display anything?!
maybe you should ask your friend if you can test out your video cad on their computer just to isolate the problem

surges happen. i lost my 2nd optical due to a power surge(paraell port operatino too, but that's worthless.)

I was thinking the same thing. That's why I'm starting to think my PSU isn't putting out enough power causing the system to freeze?

I had exact same problem with 6800 GT. Started fine, windows fine, start 3dmark and the thing just slowed to 0 fps and locked up. Every other card (9800 pro, x850) worked but not the nVidia. Changed motherboard and the GT worked fine. Go figure. The card worked in my other pc with no problems.

here is my thread

Alright so I swap my 6600GT for a Quadro4, install the drivers for it, and run some tests. Works fine. So I put my 6600GT back in and reinstall it's drivers and now it works no problem...... So confusing!
