Yea i understand the OP posted an LCD TV.
But at that price point... wouldn't the Dell HD Plasma be better ?

Well, this LCD has a higher resolution. The Dell plasma is 1024x768 vs the Phillips is 1366x768. This deal looks pretty hot if the picture quality is good.

This price is very good.

Cheapest place online via Froogle is here

Our Price: $3799.95 + $244.95 shipping = $4044.90

Costco: $2999.99 + $199.99 shipping + $247.50 tax (8.25%) = $3447.48

Save at least $500 from arguably a more reliable vendor

not to mention costco warranty 😉

I would think that an LCD would be better than a plasma. Plasma's tend to grow dim within a few years right?

And if the dell resolution is as stated above, its not even capable of native 720p.

contrast ratio look a little low to anyone else? 400:1 sounds really dim when you got the panasonic plasmas at 3000:1

lcd tv contrast ratios are lower than plasmas. average for lcd is 300-500, while plasmas are in the thousands.

Some Plasmas/LCDs are 1024x768 that are 720p capable. The HD spec actually doesn't say what the horizontal resolution has to be. As long as it's 16:9 capable and capable of at least 720 lines in progressive, it's HD. How's this possible? The pixels are rectangular on some plasma screens instead of square like for a computer monitor.

sure... if you think 20 years is too short. the half life of most current plasma offerings is 60,000 hrs. that means you can watch tv 8 hrs a day for 20 years before it dims to half its original brightness. i'm sure i'll upgrade in much less than 20 years anyway.

Ok, my bad.

Panasonic: States (not publicly) that the monitor is good for 20,000 to 30,000 hours. They also state that these plasma displays measure 50% brightness (phosphor ignition may be a better term) at 50,000 hours.

Fujitsu: States that the panel lasts 20,000 to 25,000 hours

Pioneer: States that the 50" PDP 502MX (or 505HD) measures half brightness (phosphor ignition) at 30,000 hours of use. They also state the newer model 503CMX (or Pro 1000HD) with a deeper pixel structure will last even longer though they do not have numbers.

Sharp: States that plasma panels only last 10,000 to 20,000 hours and that LCD monitors last longer. Figures they would say that.

So from 10,000 to 50,000 hours. Even if you take worst case from Sharp and call it going half as bright after 10,000 hours, thats still like 4 years of watching 8 hours a day which isn't too bad. Be time to upgrade to 1080p by then 🙂

This Plasma TV is "Unbelievable". Honestly, you have to see the picture quailty. Philips has some kind of "motion compensation" thingy...and it makes the picture 3D'ish. If you compare it to the TV's next to it, you can totally tell that it's one of the best ones. I think the amblight that shines on the back sides contribute to the 3D effect

Well, all 42" Plasma's have 1024x1024 resolutions, and they look great. Plasma is actually better for tv's than LCD, it's much brighter. LCD tv's are very washed out and not bright. Plasma's do get dimmer over time, but it'll be 15-20 years before it's as dim as an lcd.

I wonder if that's totally because it's an LCD and the thingys next to it were plasma.

I think they had the 42" HDTV Plasma 2899

Dell HD's have lots of quality control issues... I was considering one from the Dell Outlet (only $2099 for HD) until I started doing some research:
