In other words even though you got this monitor for cheap, they will honor the warranty for $599, so in the event they can't find a replacement for you, they will find one of equal value. So potentially you could score big time if your monitor takes a dump in the next 3 years you may get a $600 LCD for a replacement.

neat, I'll go back and get the warranty.

OK so I finally got off my rear and went to a local Best Buy to get one of these. On arriving I asked arround I asked a CSR to check for me. He said that he thought he saw some in the back. OK so I get a bit excited.... While waiting I look arround to see if I can see a floor sample of the monitor just to see what I was getting into. Nada, no floor sample. Anyhow he returns with an LCD monitor box in tow..... getting more excited now.... next he tells me the news. He says that they didn't have the monitor in stock, and wouldn't get any more this week. But they have a few Kogi's left, and mentioned that the store has listed it as an "equivelent" to the VPR. I told him thanks, but no, I would rather have the VPR. Thankfully though the CSR was a nice guy and checked the system for me to see if any of the other local BB stores had it in stock. Bingo, 2 other BB stores in the area have a few in stock. OK so I pack up and move on out to the next BB store in the area (Westminster, CA).

Get there, and like the other BB store (Costa Mesa), once again there are no VPR's on the floor or on display, however new shipments of Kogi monitors abound. So I go to the desk knowing that they should still have a few in stock. Ask the CSR who, once again a nice guy, tells me "sorry, but we don't carry those monitors, we only carry the CRT 17" monitors." Hmm, OK..... so I tell him that the Costa Mesa store says that they should have a few in stock. He thinks it over for a while and checks the computer. Looks up 17" Flat Panel LCD monitors in his system, and comes up with a string of Viewsonic monitors under "V". no VPR. OK now he looks up VPR and brings up several desktop PC's, still no 17" LCD...... OK finally he goes to the Bestbuy website and looks up the model number. Finds the model number and looks that up. Sure enough 6 in stock!!

"Wow!" he says, "I wanted to buy one of these yesterday, but I thought we were out of stock." He then goes on and tells me that the VPR was actually an equivelent to the Kogi, and that he doesn't think that the $160 rebate will print up for the VPR in store since it was an "online only" deal..... hmm I didn't remeber reading that, so I insist on getting the VPR. He then tells me that maybe I should just wait for the online store to be back in stock since I would be saving more money buying it online. Once again I politely decline and insist on getting the VPR. "How about a Kogi?" The VPR was acutally used as an "equivelent" when the Kogi was low on stock, and the $160 rebate will print out for that one in store............ OK so for the last time I decline and go for the VPR. So he asks me to follow him and lo and behold a bit off the beaten trail, a stack of 6 VPR 17" LCD's in the high recesses of the overstock area. The CSR then kindly passes me to another CSR to ring me up. And what do you know $160 rebate prints out!!! Wow what an event for this monitor.

The new CSR then tells me this:

The Kogi were the original 17" LCD on sale with rebate. However rumor had it that the stock ran out in several stores, so there was a rush to find an equivelent to satisfy a few angry Kogi-less customers. So someone decided that the VPR 17" was the equivelent.......... so bing bang boom in the system it goes, and now everyone has the VPR discounted with the $160 (and for a time $50) rebate printing up. Anyhow I guess some store managers realized a problem, and that perhapse the VPR was a bit better then the Kogi. Thus some stores removed their floor samples, and put the VPR's away. Only the people who went in an asked for it specifically would get it. Otherwise, not even a trace on the showroom floor.

Granted this may not apply for all BB stores, just the 2 I went to. Everyone wants you to buy a Kogi...... Naw I like my VPR. As for how I like it? I haven't played any games on it yet. But in the office its great, even in analog mode. I compair this to the Planar 17" a friend of mine bought last month for over $500 and its on par if not a bit brighter and clearer. Like a few others here, Warcraft III is the game of choice for me right now, and ghosting isn't really an issue since it's a RTS. I would be more worried about ghosting in a FPS or any other game where quick turning and aiming are factors. Still this will go nicely with my Shuttle SN41G2 I have on order. Thanks agent2099!!!

Was there a different rebate form for the $50, prior to the Feb 3 deadline? I know about the original form showing an April deadline...was there another form that was posted as well?

OK not sure how far this topic went, and I apologize if I am just repeating information, but I looked at the power brick that comes with the VPR and who's name do I find on it? Samsung!

In my expereince computer devices that require power bricks generally come with propriatary power bricks. It's rare to get a third party vendor to provide these since they would have to accept some of the liability in the event their power bricks fail or cause problems. Therefore most of the hardware manufacturers provide their own branded power bricks with their hardware. So does this mean that the VPR is a Samsung?

Like I said, sorry if this isn't new to the thread, but its new to me.

Just picked one up at BB and am looking at it now. Using a ATI 8500 DVI hook up, I love it. Clean, clear and crisp. I also just got the 18in Dell a few days ago and I have to say with my eyes it looks just as good as my Dell. I haven't played any games yet but no ghosting while watching DVD movie. Thanks for a great deal.:):D

I just picked this up from the BB in St. Louis-Watson Rd. (they still have at least two more) and I LOVE it!. Right now it's sitting next to my old 19"Dell P990 and I can't believe how much better this looks than the crt. Dual-Headed on my ATI 7500 is fun, though now I want to sell the Dell and buy another one...

oh yeah, and they offered my the 3year plan right off and I had no problems with it, the 160 rebate printed out fine too.

I also picked one up yesterday and it is sweet. Did online purchase and picked up in the store. Oddly enough they didn't have any on display, and none in boxes on the floor or on shelves.

UT2003 plays nice on it and graphics are crisp. Not too many have commented on the design, but this is really a nice looking monitor, design wise. Pleasing to look at black and silver color and some of the small touches are nice like the blue LED on the power button.

Glad I was able to get in on this one too!

I compared vpr with my friend's samsung171 today (the one that's also designed by porsche) and the only difference is, my monitor is ALOT brighter. the ghosting is about the same on the 2 monitors....

my conclusion, this is a VERY GOOD deal. one of my friend rushed to the local BB today to get his share of the deal, and luckily, he got the last one =)

First off, this seems to definitely be worthy of a hot deal. But does anyone notice some blurring of particular colors, especially (and maybe only on) dark backgrounds, something like on this page:

sample contrasty website

While scrolling even slowly, certain colors of text seem susceptible to fading/ flashing, not sure if this is technically ghosting. May be a peculiarity of all LCD's (?) (Mine's on a Radeon 8500, digital out)

This deal is very tempting. Maybe I should buy it and resell it at ebay to get rid of my over $500 Best Buy gift card.

I ordered one online on 2/3 for delivery. When I click on "Create Receipt" on Best Buy's website, the receipt shows a SKU of 11202013!

Does anyone else have this problem? (Check your online receipt!) I am hoping this won't cause a problem with the rebate (which states SKU 5206877)...

Man i picked this up last night with Maleficus. I got the manger to honor the $50 mail in rebate in store after one of the employess told me that there is no such thing as in-store pickup. Out of store it was 497.33 with teh extended warranty. I am sending in the 160 rebate. Yay I got the monitor and a handshake.

Now that it's back in stock online, it should be pretty easy to score the $50 rebate, too. After all, the order was placed online, and you're submitting a real rebate form that Best Buy can't deny publishing. Copy here (great move saving this, Jaybert). They'll probably decline the rebate, but it should be easy to win if you dispute it, as everything you've done is legit.

So:
$459
+ tax
-$160 MIR (requires original UPC)
-$ 50 MIR (rquires copy of UPC)
-------
$249 + tax

By all accounts, this is one of those rare exceptions where it's worth buying the extended warranty, as it should enable you to get a $459 replacement in 35 months time, if there's so much as a single dead pixel. And think what $459 will but in 3 years :). Summing up the last 168 posts, this monitor is very good (but not great) quality, and a screaming deal at this price. Deal ends Saturday, when the $160 rebate expires.

Well, I bought this LCD and decided to return it. I honestly didn't think that the picture quality was good at all. The colors were washed out and worse, seemed "off." I played with all of the settings imaginable on it, but the colors never seemed right. It looked like it was stuck in "warm" mode, as all of the colors at a slight "red" hue to them. For example, areas of the screen that were supposed to be grey appeared as tan.

Worse, there was a wavy pattern moving from the bottom of the screen upwards.

I also found the fact that both the VGA cable and the DVI cable are permanently attached...so one has to dangle when the other one is in use. And they are not exactly the shortest cables in the world.

All in all, I probably just got a defective one, but I wasn't impressed enough to do an exchange for it. :(

for the record, I did not copy the form so people here could purchase it when the form was no longer valid and use it. I put it up for those people who ordered the form when the rebate was still listed as valid but did not get a chance to print/save it to their computer.

Obviously, I take no responsibility as to what you do with the form, but my explicit reason for providing it for those who ordered within the timeframe when the form was listed.

Point taken re your intentions, Jaybert, and that you are in no way responsible for how folks use this form.

That said, I believe it's totally legitimate to still use it. Nobody has purchased the monitor when the rebate was no longer valid - based on the dates in the form, it is still valid. It just suddenly became hard to find, because BB stopped posting it, and posted another instead. That doesn't make the original rebate form invalid, just hard to find.

yes...I could very easily say that I printed it out prior to the rebate switch and had every intention to order it online before the 8th. I can say that I never checked again for the rebate after the 3rd, since I already had it printed out. :p

Hey, I'm not trying to fight for Best Buy or anything. If I were in your position, I'd probably be trying to get the $50 too.

But the way I see it, just admit to what you are doing and don't try to hide behind technicalities. It seems like fraud to me but hey, as long as you are ok with that no one can stop you. :)
