Sold by Woot, free shipping. 1, 1.5, and 2.5 quart mixing bowls, 13x9 and 8x8 pans, and pie plate. Everything except the pie plate comes with lids.

Amazon link cleaned up

The 13x9 and pie plate are top choices by Cook's Illustrated and the 8x8 is pretty good too. The bowls are round and glass and stuff :sneaky:

Great price, but apparently there is an ongoing debate whether this is true "Pyrex" as we have known through the years. Some are arguing that they changed the material used to make the glass and it does not tolerate heat as well.

No debate, it's been changed for years. I question that I have ever used real Pyrex to be honest (though I did see some at an old person's place this week!), but it is still "reinforced" glass or whatever they would call it.

The big change seems to be the resistance to damage from temperature changes. So don't pull it out of the oven and throw in cold water (even cold counters, I usually grab a cutting board or towel anyway), don't use under the broiler (which it isn't rated for anyway).

I think common sense should be sufficient, and outside of that I'm sure any manufacturing defects should show up pretty quickly, in an explosive fashion. o_O

edit: we have a couple each of the 8x8 and 13x9 pans, haven't had any problems. Just picked up 3 of the pie plates this week, and just ordered this set with some reward points as a gift for about $8. :D

We microwave with these containers all the time, but have never subjected them to oven or broiler temps. For fridge storage, they are great (although a bit heavy).

If you want borosilicate glass like some of the old Pyrex, get Lock N Lock's Boroseal line which they proudly advertise as borosilicate. Yes it has better thermal tolerance, and if it gets dropped, it will split into big pieces instead of tons of little ones, but soda lime glass (which is what modern Pyrex is made out of) actually has better shock resistance for smaller dings like banging it lightly against the side of a stove or something. And Boroseal is made of thinner glass, probably to save costs since borosilicate glass costs multiple times what soda lime glass costs.

wow thanks for the tip on the borosilicate. I grew up around the old Pyrex professional stuff. then in the 80 or 90s I purchased a cheap consumer set. I never cared about putting in ice into a red glowing vessel or any other thermal shock. they took everything and more.

seems like everything is not as resilient anymore in the effort to cut corners though we have tech that is wondrous. i would be very disappointed if I had to baby a pyrex brand item now. guess I have to switch.

Its like those fake unbreakable ace combs they sell now and other endless degraded brands. For example the original ace where flexable and resilient, they last till you lost one or set it in a nuclear reactor... the new combs and brushes just snap etc etc.

Hmmmn well pyrex says they are the same soda glass ;) composition as they have always been. they say they just changed hands from corning (which we know makes good fiber optic and other glass product like corningware... gorilla glass? anyway here is their post... ...

Corning outlet (in Corning) has this set on sale all the time for about the same price. They have a website & have also had some deals with free shipping.
