DDT and the world

Oh RIIIIGHT. All forest fires are man made. I did not know that. I always thought lightning sparked many forest fires. I only thought that because that's what the California Department of Forestry and various local fire departments that go to forest fires told me. Boy, thanks for clearing that one up.

Ever read the article that found global warming on the outer planets? What about the one that found that the sun has warmed up? How can the government regulate volcanos? It's can't. That's a large part of my point. There are some things that we cannot reasonably control.

Correct. Man has been secretly transporting excess greenhouse gasses to Mars and other planets, thus explaining why those planets are also undergoing global warming.

That was pretty dumb Steve. Global Warming is just that... The globe, warming up. It may or may not have anything to do with the hole in the ozone layer, those crazy automobiles, or Demon-Xanth's devil avatar winking at me seductively.

Don't start talking about volcanos and pollution. I dominated Texmaster when he presented this argument (back before he was banned)

The EPA wasn't around then, iirc. I believe it was the Food and Drug Administration that made the first move.

Her book was a fraud and completely misrepresented the science and studies.

Rachel Carson sounded the initial alarm against DDT, but represented the science of DDT erroneously in her 1962 book Silent Spring. Carson wrote "Dr. DeWitt's now classic experiments [on quail and pheasants] have now established the fact that exposure to DDT, even when doing no observable harm to the birds, may seriously affect reproduction. Quail into whose diet DDT was introduced throughout the breeding season survived and even produced normal numbers of fertile eggs. But few of the eggs hatched." DeWitt's 1956 article (in Journal of Agriculture and Food Chemistry) actually yielded a very different conclusion. Quail were fed 200 parts per million of DDT in all of their food throughout the breeding season. DeWitt reports that 80% of their eggs hatched, compared with the "control"" birds which hatched 83.9% of their eggs. Carson also omitted mention of DeWitt's report that "control" pheasants hatched only 57 percent of their eggs, while those that were fed high levels of DDT in all of their food for an entire year hatched more than 80% of their eggs.

Funny how that works, huh?

If you do a search on her and DeWitt online, you'll find hundreds of pages about the outright fraud in her book.

If you're too lazy to read the whole thing, because it's super long and wordy, skim and read the bolded lines... they're brief summaries of each section. All in all it says that DDT was great, there was never any real proof to any of the claims made by the EPA in regards to harming any living thing other than what it was intended to harm, that the EPA strongarmed it out.

Any of you oldtimers here remember the controversy and know anything first hand?
