Hi.

I currently have a 3.0Ghz P4 running on an Intel D865GBF motherboard.

I need help in choosing ram.

Does dual channel have a very high performance increase than single channel?

I am not an overclocker, therefore i won't be tapping into any bios settings. I just want straight DDR400 Ram.

People have been telling me that Samsung Ram is bad, as well as KingMax. Is this true? Are they stable and reliable at factory settings (stock speeds) ?

I don't want to pay for no OCZ or Crucial memory. Thats just way over my budget.

I'm lookin for a stick of 512Mb. People said single channel isn't that much of a performance decrease from dual channel, but I sitll need opinions. Also, is there a big difference between double sided and single sided sticks?

Fastest ------ Dual channel dual sided sticks
Fast ------ Dual channel single sided sticks
Slow ------ Single channel dual sided sticks
Slowest ------ Single channel single sided sticks

Well technically the fastest setup according to Intel is dual channel dual sided sticks x 4 (if you have 4 slots) but you get the point I hope.

Samsung memory is solid. Very reliable and one of the biggest manufacturer's of memory. Speed differences are relative to what you are planning to run them for. Honestly, my PC2700 isn't exactly THAT much slower than PC3200 running @ stock speeds according to SisSandra's memory bandwidth tests. Muskin basic green, Kingston ValueRam, etc... are some name brand lines of memory with lifetime warranties that are relatively cheap & run @ advertised speeds.

If Samsung Ram is as good as you say.

THen why does it sell for so cheap then? A stick of 512Mb of Samsung DDR400 Ram is alot cheaper than other names .

if you think price makes an item better just sink $400 into a gig of corsair PC4000, then i will laugh at you :)

No. I wasn't basing quality on price.

But i've heard from some ppl that samsung wasnt' that great. I've heard a variety of opinions.

I also read in articles that some of the high end Ram sticks from Crucial and OCZ used samsung chips too.

Any other opinions on generic name brand ram i could possibly get?

I agree Kingston HyperX makes a very good line of memory for a reasonable price. However in GenuineInfinity's case, not really neccessary since he will not be OCing. Reason why some other ram chips are more expensive Genuine is because of the fact more expensive memory modules have more aggressive timings and generally include heatspreaders on the chips. Samsung chips are used in quite a few cases such as PNY, Buffalo, etc... Reason samsung memory sticks may be a bit cheaper than the rest is the fact that they generally do not have heatspreaders (unless you get Rambus samsung sticks), have timings for people who do not OC (likely a CL3 stick you're looking at), and will not have the fancy retail packaging.

With that said, I would stay away from generic sticks of memory, for sometimes they are reject sticks of memory that did not pass minimum specs. (Example is Fry's, outpost generic line of memory). As well, warranty in those cases can range between 90 days to 1 year. Its a crap shoot with generic memory for you have get one stable enough to run, but it also may give you the chimes of death and the blue windows page fault screen. In any case do a bit a research and get memory thats right for you. There won't be many people who DO NOT oc that will claim samsung memory sticks suck. In fact quite a few computer manufacturer's use samsung OEM sticks for their memory. (HP/COMPAQ) Best of luck to you.

Samsung CHIPS are great.... better if they are in a Samsung PCB. The reason you see Samsung memory cheap is that the board is not samsung....
