DDR3 System Memory ?

I know DDR 2 is just now catching on and all, but I was wondering when / if anybody has any est times for DDR3 for system memory ?

I know that cost is a big factor 😉

What kinda increase in preformance would there be using..say, Samsumg 1.6n Ram ?

no idea, but consider the difference between DDR video cards and DDR3 video cards, probably abt the same performance gains

Give DDR2 some time and it will start to take over. Its already starting to improve.

I remember reading how AMD is heavily pushing the DDR3 research movement in an effort to avoid even having to switch to DDR2 and put their effort into switching to DDR3.

She may or may not know what she's talking about.

XDR and DDR3 are the emerging technologies that are likely to replace DDR2.

It would make good sense, there are several advantages:

!) Obviously, by avoiding placing emphasis on playing catch-up on DDR2, which has limited advantage right now anyway, a great deal more resources can go to DDR3.

2) DDR3 should debut before DDR2 gains any real advantage on DDR1.

3) Taking an early, active roll in DDR3 will place them in the lead when it comes to the PC.

4) Lower power consumption Will give AMD a leg-up on the notebook market and among the heat-conscientious, such as power-users.

5) If they can implement some sort of backwards-copatibility with DDR1 they can leapfrog DDR2 altogether and offer a superior upgrade path to those prone to seeking such a path, such as power-users.

Bandwidth is going to become VERY VERY important when Multicore CPUs start rolling out, there will be a large advantage to DDR2 in this regard. Its the same reason that the Xbox2 is using DDRII and the PS3 is using XDR.

2 Cores = double the bandwidth needed.

The main reason DDR3 is not a system memory yet is because of the price, when you buy a 256MB of GDDR3 video card, more than half the money goes just for the expensive memory.

DDR3 for a system memory of 512MB at least will be too expensive for consumers.

AMD, Intel, ATI and nvidia are making more money from lower end products like celeron, FX5200 and etc than high end products like 6800GT P4 EE A64 FX.

They will have to find a way to lower the price of DDR3 before it can be sold to the mainstream market that buys cheap computers.

DDR3 and GDDR3 are 2 very different things.
