DDR3 question Please HELP!

I am putting together a system and need some info on X58 and ddr3 memory. Do you need 3 slots filled to get it at max ddr3 speeds? Should I get 3-2g sticks for a total of 6g or is 2x2-2g ok filling 4 slots. Just not sure how the ddr3 works
 
Most x58 boards have 3 or 6 dimm slots for tripple channel ram. 3x2gb is plenty. The dual channel stuff is for amd or 1156 p55 boards.
 
I would go for 3 sticks tho there are many boards like the ASUS P6TD Deluxe and the ASUS P6X58D Premium that will operate in triple channel mode even with 4 sticks.
