I am looking to buy a dell server, and I have been away from Intel for a long time. First off, can someone explain why a 800 Mhz FSB for the processor can work with 533 Mhz DDR2? Secondly, will I get a noticeable performance boost if I go with DDR2-667 or DDR-800 for that matter?

Thanks in advance

First off, if the server you are looking at has an 830, call them and see if you can get a 930 instead.

DDR and DDR2 memory, when run in dual channel, run at twice the rated speed, so that is why 533mhz memory can run the 800mhz fsb of the cpu. You will not get a noticeable perormance boost with 667mhz memory.

Hi,

Thanks for the clarification. So who really needs DDR2-800 memory? I can definitely get the 930, but for an extra $300 *sigh*. BTW, The Pentium D 830 is a free upgrade from a Celeron D 331, so I think it makes sense.

Are you looking at the PowerEdge SC430? Damn, they are charging an arm and a leg for cpu upgrades.

Intel® Pentium®D Processor 930 at 3.0GHz/2X2MB Cache, 800MHz FSB [add $299 or $7/month2]

And that "add $299" is on top of the cost of the cpu in the basic config. :D

Actually Poweredge 850. The thing that looks appealing is Pentium D 830 is a free upgrade, and power is not really a concern. Although I do like the idea of an extra 1MB of cache. I am looking at building my own too on newegg, but Dell's warranty is pretty sweet, so it's a tough call.

At that level of server, I'd build.
