adding vdimm hurts performance

No it doesn't ,vdimm doesn't effect RAM timings so it won't effect peformance ............unless the extra voltage causes the RAM to be unstable?

Memory is kind of a tough one, you have to reach in there and touch it, or mount a digidoc sensor on it, or run it till it gets soo hot it freaks out:Q
Conservative is definitely the way to go, since you can't readily monitor the temps. Thug's statements are based on benchmarks, which works for me

Very true.
My limited experience here is running Crucial PC2100 @2.65v (default for an Asus A7V 266-E) for about 1.25yrs ,was still ok when I sold it.
Who knows in the really long run!
