Jesus, does anyone know when they are coming down again? I thought we would see a drop after Christmas, but it looks like they are still going up. I'm kicking myself for not stocking up when it was $25 for 256MB.

The question isn't when will it drop, it's will it drop at all. I'd say prices will drop in a few months but no where near what it was before. I'd say in the $40-50's for a 256 stick in about 4-6 months.

They'll go down again if supply increases (unlikely) or demand decreases (unlikely) or if there is greater competition (unlikely). Today's prices aren't bad compared to some points in history.

Well, with Micron picking up Toshibas memory business, they could probably kick up production and undercut everyone. And just to let you know, if demand goes up and supply stays the same, prices go up. If demand is up and supply is up, then prices stay the same as long as they go up equally. If demand goes down and supply goes up then prices drop. It's most likely that with the new p4 ddr chipset demand will go up, and even if supply goes up, prices will stay about the same.

One benefit of higher prices is that memory firms can put more $$$ into R&D again (blurb about this over at overclockers.com). That means (hopefully), they'll work on speeding up memory so it's not so much of a damn bottleneck.

i don't think memory is that big of a bottleneck esp if you compare it to hdd...
price will probably be "high" for 6-8 months i would guess...

Yea it seems pretty ridiculous. Everybody just says it is much better than it has been... so what? It is much worse than it has been!

Wow im glad I purchased my 3 sticks of ddr ram before prices sky rocketed. I didn't notice the price change until now. Hey at least crucial memory still offers free shipping :)

I'm with you on that one phas3 :) But I only scored 2 sticks probably should of grabbed that 3rd or 4th one ;) But none the less saved 1/2 of what they cost last time I saw. Gonna check now and say 'whew'!

As far as if they go back down, when the 512 MB modules start becomming popular to buy instead of the 256 MB and another ecomony crash. But since prices are going back up sort of means ecomony is getting a bit better..... IMO

For the vast majority here most don't need more then 256mb in their system...ONly a handfull have any real use for over 512mb of ram...

So sit back and wait ddr will change with mhz increase and soon who will want the pc2100 anyways...

I have noticed that the newer pc2700 and 3000 have dropped in price by almost half in the past couple weeks, must not be very many people buying it.

It actually seems like the biggest price hikes happened on crucials site, you can still find some other places offerring ddr ram for quite a bit cheaper.

am i wrong?

I agree with your 'sit back and wait...etc...' But I got them at a cheap price and why not the upgrade for now. Next will be Thoroughbred (sp?) with 166 FSB (I think that is right...) so new mobo, cpu, and memory then.....

You are mostly right about 256 MB in the system unless you are playing WW2 Online which 512 MB is pretty much way to go, I tested it with 128/256/512 huge difference from 256 to 512. But that is only one game and a handfull of people....

NEC and Hitachi are considering exiting the RAM business.

Seems like consolidation is the order of the day. That means prices will be going up, not down.:(
