DDR 333

BD231

Lifer
Dose anyone know much of anything about this new ram coming out?, I'll be upgrading my system pretty soon and im wondering if DDR 333 is worth waiting for. When will it be coming out?, are there any known chipsets that'll use this type of ram?

You can put DDR333 in any DDR system, but there are no chipsets or CPUs that will support the bus speed that this was designed for, so it's simply if you're overclocking your system and want to push your FSB as high as it'll go (DDR333 is able to do up to a 166 MHz bus).

Well, truthfully. DDR333 is only going to be useful in 2 situations.

1. On P4 platform. 2.7GB/ps of bandy should put P4X performance completely up to, if not abover 850+PC800.
2. On the new Integrated chipsets for the Athlon like SiS 740, VIA KM333, nForce Crush 17/18. Those will be using new high performance integrated graphics (740 using SiS 315, KM333 using S3 Zoetrope and Crush 17/18 using GF3 MX) and will need the extra bandy. Especially Crush 17/18.

The Athlon and PIII will not benifit at all from DDR333. So unless u fall in those 2 categories, I'd wait.

you can run the ECS at 166Mhz and getting DDR 333 would definately aide in stability you can take a 1.2 and run it at 7.5x166 ehehe lets see what that would do....

That's assuming they don't bump the Athlon's FSB to 333 or 400 MHz. Who knows, it might happen. Why would AMD just watch as the world goes through DDR333 and DDR400?

The Athlon will benifit quite nicely from a 166mhz fsb.

He's talking about memory speed, not front side bus speed.

NO way that is true unless the memory/fsb are asynchronous and the fsb would stay at DDR266!!!! The Athlon platform loved the increase from 100mhz to 133mhz ddr fsb and memory.

The next MAJOR performance increase from the Athlon platform will be from the 266mhz to the 333mhz. bus.

A Thunderbird 1.5ghz on a 333mhz bus would most likely beat a desktop Palomino at 1.5ghz on a 266mhz bus.

Added Link to Illustrate how Athlon is affected by a rise it FSB speed:
1200/133 beats a 1400/100 Athlon

but from what I hear, it will be a while to come around, unless for overclockers, which always like to push their systems to the max. It probably will not have an earth-shattering effect on performance, but may provide a slight boost.

even if you don't want to overclock your 133mhz fsb CPU you don't have to to run @ 166mhz.. just reduce the multiplier (that's what I did with my duron so I could run 133mhz fsb).
