DDR 3200 running @ ddr 2100

If I buy ddr 3200 or ddr 2700 memory, what will happen if I put it on a motherboard for ddr 2100 memory, assuming no overclock. Will the memory just run at the lower speeds, or does it not just not work? I think they use the same slot, etc.

in theory it should work fine and just run at the 266(pc2100) speeds with really fast timings like 2-2-2-5. i have some pc3200 in a nf2 ultra board with a xp2000 (266/pc2100) and that is what it is doing.
