DD-WRT Warning

I want to warn anyone that is researching to buy a router against the WHR-G54S with DD-WRT. I was really pulled towards this solution initially. All the features thats this would add with a cheap $40 router seemed really enticing. There is a guy on dslreports who had another buffalo router (i don't remember his nick) who said he bricked his router when he tried to change the QOS settings. He had a different model than what i was going to buy so i really didn't worry that much. I actually got my viatalk adapter and the new router tonight at the same time. I proceeded to flash the router with dd-wrt (kind of a wierd procedure because you had to turn the router off and then issue a tftp command and run it and then plug the router in). Anyways everything went well. I logged into my router and everything was perfect. I had internet connectivity. First thing in order was to set up QOS on the viatalk adapter to the highest priority. So i got the mac address of the viatalk adapter and went into the QOS setup on the router. I entered the mac address and raised it to the highest priority. Well this bricked my router. I looked into the procedure when you have a bad flash how to recover your router but nothing worked. The problem is i didn't have a bad flash. It appears that the DD-WRT firmware is VERY buggy. When you do something as simple as i do and it totally axes your router is bad news to me and since this is factory firmware you have just voided the warranty. This has left a very bad taste in my mouth. Moral of the story is just get a Zyxel x-550 and be done with it. I ordered one tonight.

I'm sure that there will be those who say "I have had no problems at all". Well im sure maybe you haven't. Maybe you didn't set QOS up how i set it up. But no matter what anyone says nothing should brick your router no matter what settings you make to it in the router setup. I almost ordered a Zyxel Zywal 2 Plus thinking thinks would have on the level of functionality of dd-wrt but not the bugs. yes i know its not wireless but that didn't make much of a difference to me.

Damn those open source developers and their crappy software!

From the looks of their bug tracking site there are plenty of issues with QoS.

EDIT: What settings were you using? I may try it out.

don't get me long n0c....i love open source and its principles. I really like linux/Openbsd but unfortunatly what happened tonight was definitly not my fault. I only changed two things before this happened. When i logged into the router i set things up for no-ip.com which went fine and then i went to change the QOS and thats when it got bricked. I guess my point here is when your doing something like this your always taking a risk. If there is a bug in a linux distro and i install it no problem i can just wipe it and install something else unfortunatly with something like a router if you screw it up your sunk.

I use DD-WRT I use it for the SNMP support so I can monitor my entire network bandwidth, I love it. Don't use QoS though.

Using Linksys WRT54G

Don't take my tired rantings too seriously. I complain about plenty of open source software all the time.😉

DD-WRT is nice, but it does have some issues. I'm hoping v24 will help with some of them (WPA2 client mode).

Did you pop the router open? Any pics of the inside? I'm a puss and haven't gotten around to opening any of mine.
