DD - Ram vs. SD-Ram

It's not. DDR is a type of SDRAM. Now, DDR (double data rate) SDRAM is twice as fast as SDR SDRAM (single data rate).
 
DDR ram makes use of the top and bottom of each cycle, Sdram only makes use of bottom (or top, can't remember offhand which it is), so you get ram that's "twice" as fast as regular ram, to put it simply.
 
As above, handles double the data each cycle. Real world system wont be twice as fast though. Ususally about 20% average increase depending on what you're doing.
You have to weigh it against the cost of getting a new mb and memory. DDR is pretty expenxive as so many platforms are switching to it right now.
