DC's pioneering 99.1 WHFS replaced with Latin music.

"The Washington-area FM radio station WHFS, long a pioneering purveyor of alternative rock, did a programming U-turn at noon today by ditching the genre for a Spanish-language, Latin music format featuring middle-of-the-road superstars such as Marc Anthony and Juan Luis Guerra."

You know exactly what just happened. More Latin listeners = more ad $.

Well at least it's better than the Infinity Network, where censorship has reached an all time high. Absolutely no talks or hints about sex, and no code words. Everything said on air must be understanble by 90 years old grandmas and 6 years old children.

Yeah they did the same thing here in the NYC area with WLIR. They changed it from a new wave station to a mira mira station.

Horrible.

/pours the 40 out for KLOL and WHFS and the many other Clear Channell stations turned into sh!tty salsa playing nightmares.

I for one welcome our new Spanish speaking overlords.
Long Live the United States of Mexico.

Meh, there isn't *ROCK* station in the DFW area. How sad is that... Sure there are "oldies rock" and "classic rock" but no "modern rock." The alt. station altered it's format to include more rock, but now there's less alt.

Radio is crap here...

was going to lunch today and wondered WTF happened

gonna have to give this a huge

i don't see how they can gather that many listeners because basically zero listeners that previously listened are going to listen to them now

they have to reacquire a whole new listener base

oh well
glad i have an mp3 player

Ladies, ladies, WHFS sucked. Turn your dials to 97.9 and return to your roots, heathens.

Oh, wait, no, HFS had turned into a lame rap/rock/pop hybrid top-40 station. 98 Rock never has been and never will be one of those.

people that listen to HFS never listed to 97.9 for the most part

i am not a huge fan of classic rock

some of it a really like but some i really really hate enough that I can't stand listening to it

most likely everyone will tune into DC 101

98 rock sounds like crap for those of us who live in VA.

Classic rock? I'm not talkin' about WQSR, son. 98 rock is firmly stuck in the 90's.

Yea, I fell asleep last night to Nece, and I wake up to spanish gibberish. I was like wtf did their signal get pushed off (its happened before). Ridiculous, you would think that Infinity would keep them around because of the HFStival, which probably brought in inf revenue every year.

There are also those of us in the southern part of their range, that can't get 97.9 without some static. Guess it will be DC 101 from now on, not that there's anything wrong with that.

I can't believe how sh8tty the stations are around Balt/DC area. HFS, 98rock, dc101 were my presets. Now, I have to replace hfs with 106.5 (ehh).

Well, the 98rock people are gloating at Nacho mama's tonight.

i don't see how listener's of this genre of music can be happy

it is just one less channel they can tune into now

rock is dying. Similiar thing happened here in Northern California. Now can't find a station to listen to Metallica...so sad. 🙁

Btw, this is going to turn into a Balt/DC AT user thread🙂

Of which there are surprisingly many. Nobody's the first to admit it, but they all come swimming out of the woodwork when something interesting happens around here.

HOLY SH!T -- i was just looking at their website this morning -- i had no idea that this was going on. Had the given any inditaction that this was going to happen?!!!

i wonder where the junkies are going to end up.?!

thankfully i've still got my trusty XM which is what i listen to most of the time anyways. but still -- 99.1 is so far ahead of 101 - this is going to leave hardly anything to listen on regular radio around here.
