Hello!

Recently the DCOM service on one of my computers started causing the System event log to overflow with the message:
DCOM got error "The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it. " attempting to start the service Iap with arguments "-Service" in order to run the server:
{B0C61A79-0870-4BE4-9153-9CCAF422E31F}

A Google and TechNet search turned up nothing. I did a registry search for this key and nothing came up either.

Does anyone have any ideas? My computer is running really slowly and a lot of applications are hanging and crashing.

-Por

Also look in your Services to see if you can determine what "lap" is. Has something recently changed such as updating a patch or installing new software?

I'll check and see when I get back to that machine.

And I don't remember anything being changed recently. I'm the only person who admins those machines.

If you open up an event in your event viewer, you will see a number of items listed including: date, time, type, Event ID, SOURCE, User, computer and category.

The SOURCE is DCOM, as he stated at the beginning.

Event 1005 can be caused for a multiple of reasons.

Most likely, if this is not in a DOMAIN enviroment, has to do with a DHCP error.
(which would be the cause os the slowdown)

Also have seen this error pop up when uninstalling or upgrading NERO or CDRWin.

Also, does the EVENT LOG list any files that are corrupted?

Okay, here is the full event log readout from a txt export. It keeps repeating this error over and over.

2/20/2005 3:27:45 PM DCOM Error None 10005 NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM <COMPUTER> "DCOM got error ""The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it. "" attempting to start the service Iap with arguments ""-Service"" in order to run the server:
{B0C61A79-0870-4BE4-9153-9CCAF422E31F}"

This is not a domain environment and the computer is using a Sonicwall TZ-170 as a DHCP server through a Dell switch, which has worked perfectly so far with six other nodes. The error mainly occurs when attempting to burn a CD (maybe a problem with Roxio in a Limited User environment?) and when attemption to send/receive with Outlook 2003.

Thanks for the help people, I'm stumped! :)

Ok, with a 10005, the key in the error message is "attempting to start the service Iap with arguments ""-Service" Once you know what the service Iap is, then you can fix the problem. Are you running a Dell by any chance? Dell has an Iap service that runs its OpenManage client instrumentaiton and could be the source of the event log errors.

It is a Dell actually. :) I recently discovered OMCI on a new system and disabled it but I forgot to do so on our older, new Dell systems.

I'll check tonight. Thanks for the tip!

not using any creative software are you?
I installed some last summer and started getting a ton of dcom errors. uninstalled it and they strangely stopped.
