DC++

I currently use newsgroups and recently was told by a friend to get dc++ to share my "stock". I installed the program and attempted to get it going but had no luck, I pry was doing something wrong. I havn't had alot of time to read up on how to run it but was able to glance at a website yesterday and really didn't understand how to get it working still. I have loaded about 30 gigs of stuff, I dont know if there is anything else to do but it wont let me search or really get a list from anyone. If there is someone that can enlighten me on the subject I would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

You need to go to the hublist and enter a hub or two. Or 20.
I recommend no more than 5, regardless of ISP speed.

EDIT: You also have to learn about the rules. Some hubs have no rules. Other have tons of rules. Some require a share minimum or that you make a password to enter them.
Each hub is independant and different, though some will auto link you to others if they are full.

Also remember, the hubs DONT share any files. The users share directly to each other. The hub just lends a convenient way to find other users. Some hubs specialize in pr0n or Linux ISO's or other things. Read the description on the hublist before joining them.

I also HIGHLY recommend a hardware firewall. People are shown your IP and have a direct link to it through the program. You dont want people reading files you didnt choose to share.

Well I got it working, I had to put my firewall on passive in the settings. I see that you recomend a hardware firewall, Could that be my nvidia firewall, Would that ultimatly work?

Also If I leave my firewall on passive, Could someone hack into my computer or can they just look at my files

Nvidia firewall is not a hardware firewall. It's a pretty crappy software firewall. Get a real one either from the school's security software or free one from Kerio, Sygate, or Zonealarm.

Well, my nVdia chipset Motherboard has a hardware firewall on both LAN ports, not very good but requires no setup.
I also have a firewall on my router.

Passive mode returns less results when searching and makes it difficult to download from some people.

I would recommend active mode in DC++ with your software firewall set to allow basic permissions to the DC++ program.
