Are the stock heatsinks that come with these any good for overclocking single cores? I've heard they have a couple of heatpipes. I'm planning to buy a retail 165, use its stock cooler on my current 146 and use my existing XP90 on the 165. One of these will go in my main machine and the other one in a second computer I'm setting up. (haven't decided which will go where, depends on how well the 165 overclocks)

I bought my 170 as an OEM chip so it didn't come with a heatsink, but from the pictures I remember seeing I think the fan on the stock DC heatsink is kinda small (70x15mm or something like that). It's definitely worth a try though, because people seemed to get pretty nice overclocks on their dual cores even with the stock heatsink.

Apparentky the stock HSFs are pretty nice, they have heatpipes and a copper base, it should do you fine.

I installed Dual DualCore 270 a couple months back and they used the stock heatpipe AMD heatsink and personly i did not like them. They were loud and idle temps were between 45-48, loaded was in the 50's, with on CPU being 2-3 * from each other. This was done in a Antec Titan 550 case with antec TriCool fans all set to Med.

I say if you are going to overclock then get something better.

Personly i was looking at the SI-120 or the XP-90 for my newly wanting DualCore Personal machine.

I am planning to put the XP90 on the 165 anyway, but was just wondering if the stock 165 cooler is good enough for the 146, which I'm guessing produces significantly less heat. It would save me a bit of money if I don't have to buy another separate heatsink. I guess it doesn't hurt to try it out, especially as the retail 165s are generally about the same price as the OEM ones.

Exactly, try it out and see how it goes. If it does not meet your needs, move the XP90 back to the 146 and pick up a BigTyphoon, Scythe, etc for the 165 :)

LOVE my BigTyphoon, can't even hear it at idle, not even very noticable during load :)
