Unless you have a fire arms license, can you get a gun, to use an old term, "mail order"? I thought after the JFK assassination legislation was passed that banned that.

You need an FFL unless it's an "antique" gun (old receiver made before 1899 or some such).

Isnt IT illegal to transport firearms in DC?

Federal law protects people carrying firearms "through" DC on the interstates without stopping, but DC residents have to abide by local regulations, which IIRC are ridiculously strict. You have to be transporting said firearm from one authorized location to another (shooting range, gunsmith, etc. There's an official list somewhere). And they have to be unloaded/cased/ammo separate/all that jazz.

DC arguably has the most draconian gun laws in the US. It's also the murder capital of the US. But as far as DC authorities are concerned that's all Maryland and Virginia's fault, despite the fact that said states have lower crime rates. :p
