In this we agree. Honesty - whether from team mates or from projects and their coordinatiors - is the one and only basis for ethics and for correct behavior - and in the long run, for the success of a project.

Previously in this thread we have discussed if and how, before one decides which project to crunch for, projects could be researched, the data organised and published in a forum for all members to peruse. There were views that this could be detrimental for some of the projects (see for example posts on page 2).

I have taken the liberty of researching one project, Euler, in a fashion proposed. I am not saying that this should be done so, I have just tried to collect the information available on the project's home page and through a very simple Google-search.

You can find my data here: on Euler @ TAS.

If you are interested, please post ideas, critique, opposition in this thread.
If you have additional and verifiable data on Euler, please post them as responses @ TAS - please follow the link above if you are a member of TAS, otherwise please register for TAS here.

So what do you say, team mates?
Let us discuss this, because I hold, that clear and open data on the projects will aid them in getting crunchers and thus further the science!

I liked the format of the post you put up. It seemed objective and free of judgements about the project worth, etc....

I also liked the fact that the post is on a forum where there is a decent chance of inflamatory or argumentative posts being deleted without killing the entire thread.

Nice work Peter! Indeed, that's a very good overview over a DC project, solely based on facts and without personal coloring.

Well, there is a reasonably decent chance that offensive posts will be deleted, since amdxborg is admin and mod @ TAS-forum - together with one more guy who is very much interested in fair play ... ;) . However, deletion of posts is the last and final action, there has to be a lot of other efforts to keep a place polite.

TAS-forum is a TeAm Anadtech place, with a lot of space for good and verifiable data, some reasonable good stats, personal encouragement, some good nef-fing ... :p
More members who want be a part of TAS are very welcome indeed :D

I agree!

If all the information was laid out in that fashion, then my original worries would be unfounded :p

Props to you petrusbroder

dmcowen674 has posted news about Sun starting their grid for employees:
Look here first ...
Here is a short announcement...
Here is some more info...

This opens some questions for discussion:

1. How would a seller of CPU-cycles (i.e. parhaps you and me) make sure that our work is used as announced?
2. What is a reasonable price? How should it be calculated? Can a formula be developed, taking into consideration electricity, broadbad, investment, a warranty (for e.g. a certain number of hours crunched), etc, etc?
3. What rights should the buyer have: a certain amount of work? a certain amount of time? a certain amount of mathematical operations? What if the computer user needs/wants to use his computer while it is crunching?
4. What if the crunching program is buggy and crashes the system? Who should pay for the down time? Repair? Fault finding?
5. Who is responsible if the result turns out to be wrong and this error causes damage to some one? He who purchased the CPU-cycles? He who crunched?
6. Is the cruncher a contracor? Subcontractor? A service provider? All of these? None of these?
7. Should - for example - a Bunch of Crunchers (=BoCr - similar to TA) go out and sell their services? What would the consequenses of such an action be?
8. How does this affecty the security of a computer - some malware could be hidden in the client - and who makes sure that this is not the case? Should this be certified by some anti-virus company and who should pay for that? The cruncher or he who wants that work done ...

I may be naive - but isn't this a new situation which shuld be discussed? I am sure that there are other people out there (or in here ...) who are much better informed and who know better which Q's to ask and to answer.

 Let's get started - thinking and discussiong ...

Well, this seems (see above) to be a question which does not elicit much discussion ....
Am I wrong?

I guess so, the thread has been "unstickied" as well ... Maybe people just want to crunch and keep on doing what they have been doing for quite a while without discussing it anymore. But also this thread has opened some eyes, I'm most positive about that. At least mine got a lot wider concerning the choice of my DC projects. In that respect, thx for initiating this thread, Peter!

Don't be discouraged Peter. This thread has accomplished a great deal.

I think it has quieted down to prevent the emergence of political debate (at least that is why I have only contributed moderately)

So, thanks for doing this... it has been a valuable experience for me (and I suspect many others)

Dear team mates, readers and contributors,
Thanks
rose.gif
for making this thread one of the longer ( more than 80 posts), mostly read (more than 770 reads), and more interesting threads in this forum!
I hope - and think - that the thread has brought some thoughts to you - it most certainly has done that to me.

It probaly is so - as Sid says - that some (or many?) would-be-posters did not write to ...
prevent the emergence of political debate...
If the first post prevented quarrel - political and other - that is good. If the first post made people think first and post later that is good too. It would be however a pity if some people did not write down their thoughts because they were too much concerned about offending. It is a delicate balance to maintain and I think those who posted have managed it very well, parhaps too well ;) ?

Anyhow, thanks to all, enjoy the crunching and best wishes to you all from the northerna part of Sweden, where the autumn rains have started and the leaves will fall on a month, and where the bear hunters are in the woods and the moose hunters will emerge from their cottages in just three weeks! ;)

Edit:
Spelling.

OT
Bump: the moose hunt has started: look here: the result of 15 minutes of hunting! Oh, thats not me in the picture. Its the priest in our church ...

BTW: this hunt is necessary: there are som many mooses that they do some real damage on the crops: we talk about 1 000 000's of euros each year in the fields and in the woods.
/OT

Just to bring this up again ... somebody may want to read this ....

Edit: spelling.
