That's because you're an idiot. And it's exactly that general idiocy which is why we don't leave things up to the unthinking knee-jerk reactions of the mob.

I'm sorry My Little Pony, your neighs make no sense. Leave the complicated things of human concerns alone. This is beyond you. Sleep on blue and pink clouds and dream of cotton candy hay.

Funny, I'm as worried about the knee-jerk reactions of the mob as I am this 'we' of which you speak, exactly as worried, in fact.

It seems he has his own mob. It's interesting that when a discussion of a proper relationship between the people and government, he becomes unable to think and resorts to accusations of mob rule. The "mob" I support are those like the one who caused blacks to sit where they please. Certainly occasions arise when public passions support evils, like the Iraq War, so cool heads ought to prevail. As in most things there is a needed balance. Government isn't automatically evil. In fact a proper one is necessary. For my part though I consider that government derives its legitimacy and all authority from the governed. How that properly manifests is a good subject for discussion. Sadly not all can participate for whatever reason.

The history of black civil rights is one of the worst example you could possibly have chosen. Was Lincoln the President of the Confederacy? No. Yet, even after being told by Southern White Christians that he wasn't their representative, he sent out the army against them.
The overturning of poll taxes and segregation -- that was legislation from the bench. And the army had to be broken out AGAIN to enforce desegregation.

All that happened because a group or "mob" (your word) pressured government to act. I don't think MLK sat on a bench. It was people who caused the bench to act. You missed my point entirely. Re-read my discussion with Moonbeam. It's about responsiveness, not because of political gain or out of emotional hankie waving, but a process whereby the people themselves bring up concerns then the government acting in a responsible way. No "We don't need automatic weapons" Joe Biden stuff.

If anyone cares, the thread was meant to mostly be a light-hearted jab at how silly people can be about worrying over who might be "offended" by nearly anything.

I don't see this as a "freedom" issue -- there's no right to drive or have a vanity license plate. They were always optional, and IMO just a way for the government to raise extra money.

Perhaps, but I don't see why your anger was particularly directed at Washington, DC. Every state I've lived in maintains this sort of list for personalized plates. You'd have to be truely obsessive to find this to be any sort of significant impairment of your freedom. If people/news organizations spent less time on junk news like this and more on real stuff, we'd be a lot better informed and a lot better off as a society.

Well let's hurry and tell the Founding Fathers where they can shove their, "We don't need the British monarchy," stuff. Damn liberals with their fancy ideas. They need to be more responsive to the Tories.

Damn, I've always wanted a license plate that says HOTNHRD, WANA69, or WECUMN.

On the other hand, some of those I really don't understand. You can't have VNAMVET, VRMONTR or VRMONT for a license plate? o_O

As someone who is often accused of being expert at offending other people, trust me when I say I know what you mean, but I don't actually agree that it's silly. People are, in reality, offended by almost anything end even worse, are unconsciously motivated, even, to go out and fabricate it. For this reason we have in daily life to be very careful of how we deal with other people, especially if our livelihood is based on reputation. Would you be interested in buying a my product line? I know how to adapt when the business is selling for cash. So too can the government not allow a service it supplies be used to offend large numbers of people. We adjust ourselves to norms of sensitivity and good behavior because we are out for a return. I think that makes good sense and is far from silly. What is silly is that we can be offended. That all comes from self hate. You cannot offend somebody who doesn't have it. It would be like me calling you a suntopian plantofine. As long as you can't link my words to some past offense you felt, you will be fine with what I say. Some folk walk around with wounds so great just looking at them offends them. Sometimes you only have to be in the same theater to get blown away.

So, if I may guess, it is your wish, unconsciously or consciously expressed, that people were less sensitive than they are. You wish, it seems to me, that people hurt less than they do. I'd call that one mark of a good person.

I don't see why some of them are banned. Like DAUGHTR.

And ALICE? And PHOTO, VOLTAGE and about 50% of that list....

I wonder if the numbers matter. I see that "BANGEM2" is banned, but to me that clearly raises the question if "BANGEM1" is out there terrorizing the neighborhood.

:awe:

It looks like, for some reason, you can't have another state's or country's name on your plate or something. Arizona is on there. Italy too. Someone clearly has too much time on their hands
