DC/DC Area Residents: Please Look Inside!!!

If you lease an apartment/rent an apartment...

In which apartment complex do you live?
What is the nearest Metro station?
How far are you to that station?

Looking to move to the murder capital of the country? (Actually, it may not be anymore, but DC still sucks....)

Yeah, DC sucks because 80% of the murders occur in 10% of the metro area. I always thought that was pretty stupid. Seriously, if you don't want your butt to get shot, don't go to the ghetto. Otherwise, you are good.

Personally, I live in Reston and work in McLean/Tysons area. My wife works ~3 blocks away from the White House. I drop her off at the West Falls Church station, takes about 30min to get down to work.

No, DC sucks because it just does. You, yourself, do not live in DC. I lived in Balto and commuted to DC. I have driven to DC many times.

The Beltway is round, so it must be a racetrack, right? I've been doing 70-75mph and felt like I was the slow driver. This is also in heavy traffic. Heavy traffic on the DC beltway = anytime but rush hour. Rush hour = parking lot.

DC streets are confusing. They have streets with same names but different directional indicators that do not connect. (ie. They have street names like 7th Street NW, which is not the same as 7th Street NE and they do NOT connect AND ARE NO WHERE NEAR EACH OTHER. )

Unless you are near the Capital, White House, Smithsonian, etc, you are in the ghetto. Seriously, most of the city is a sh*thole.

My older brother lives in Georgetown. The area is really nice, but the permanent residents hate the city and the students of Georgetown University. With that in mind, the police in the area worry more about the "loud" parties instead of the people getting mugged right on the streets of Georgetown. Also, the residents hate the city so much, they force the metro to be built around Georgetown to keep the 'dregs of society' from coming into that area of town (seeing how well that worked with all the muggings  )

I've visited DC. Thought it was a nice area but of course we were near the capitol. If I had to live in DC it would be around the National Zoo. That neighborhood is awesome.

Nice cozy feel with lots of life.

Agreed. On Conn. Ave. I have been up and down that street. All the studios seem to be taken. 1-bedroom apartments tend to start around $1500/month with $1750 probably being average. I can't afford that. I am waiting to see if any studios open up around the Van-Ness/UDC area. This is near where my mom lives.

I live in Rockville, MD at Village Square Terrace.
All utilities paid (water, gas, electric, trash, sewage)
I have a 2BR and pay ~$1500
I have a 5 minute walk to the Twinbrook Metro station

I live in a condo - Skyline at Tenley. Across the street from Tenleytown/American University metro station, but I rarely use the metro (claustraphobia = thank god I have a car and am near the Beltway and River Rd). That said, when I worked as a congressional aide it was quite useful, since metro is pretty much the only option.

This is in DC proper right on the border of MoCo @ Rockville.

Houses in the area start at 800 thousand for 2500 sq ft. Not exactly ghetto.

You clearly no nothing about Washington DC.... most of the city is beautiful... parts of it are IMHO far more beautiful than any other city in the country... The ghetto areas of the city are pretty small and isolated... there is so much to see here, and unlike other cities nearly all the hundreds of museums, monuments historical landmarks, etc are free.

As for the DC streets, it's not our fault you can't figure the city streets out, I get around just fine. Once you learn the inwayss and outwayss of the city, the rest is easy.

Traffic does suck, but it's all in where you work, and where you live. Property is very expensive here, so people choose to live in areas far from the city, and commute towards the city(Or towards VA). Once you understand the traffic patterns, and if you're willing to pay the price property costs, you CAN avoid ridiculous traffic. I live in Falls Church, near Baileys Crossroads. I almost never get stuck in stupid traffic.

You live in Baltimore... the hellhole of the world... you have no room to talk at all.

And don't try to pull the "you don't live in DC" line on me... I've lived in the DC area sometimes the city, sometimes just outside, sometimes the suburbs for 28 years... I was born in Foggy Bottom...

DC is a wonderful place to live....

Oh and for the OP

I currently live in Falls Church at Seven Corners.... nearest metro is either: East Falls Church Metro approx 1.5 miles, or Ballston Metro also about 1.5 miles.

I own my condo... But you can rent a 1br for around $1200-1300 in this area.

No, I said I LIVED in Baltimore. I no longer live there. Baltimore is a trashy area to live, too. I moved to York, PA. Property is much cheaper, my kids are in one of the bext school districts in PA as well as the country.

I have gone to DC many times. There are beautiful parts, no doubt. However, my definition of ghetto and your definition of ghetto are apparently different. if you start talking Connecticut Ave, then you quickly are talking about areas that are NOT in DC and are actually in MD. Lets make sure we are on the same page. I am specifically referring to the district. not Silver Spring, Not Rockville, Not Fairfax, etc.

As for driving in DC...blah blah blah...I was offering the OP a warning about the way the streets work. I never said I could not navigate the area. And again, most of the people talking about nice areas are talking about locations in MD or VA - not DC. I did not say there are not any nice areas in DC--but most of the city, unless your are in the tourist areas, is not what I would call "beautiful." To each his own, though. maybe I just have higher standards.

BTW...you still aren't banned for your actions several days ago, including your parody thread? :sigh;

OP: There are many places that are metro accessible. Depending on how far out you want to live, you have the option of taking the MARC train (I rode it when I worked at the White House complex for a week--decided getting the train at 5am so I could get to work by 8 was a little much, especially since I wouldn't get home until about 7:30-8pm -- all while working a standard 8 hour day) Montgomery County and Prince George's County are your best bet in MD. Rockville, Silver Spring, College Park may all be options for you. In fact, if you are going to have access to a vehicle, you could always consider living even further out and then just driving to the Greenbelt station (or similar) to catch the Metro. In my opinion, you should try to stay outside the District, though.

I do not plan on having a car. I need to be within walking distance to Metro and grocery store, etc. The place I have found in Silver Spring is such.

In this case, we are not talking about DC the city. Silver Spring is in MD. It's a decent area. I also like Gaithersburg. Gaithersburg is pretty nice and is also metro accessible. You may want to check it out if you are not completely set on Silver Spring.

DC is great. I like it here except for the traffic. I live in the Virginia Square/Ballston area of Arlington, right between the VA Square and Ballston Metro stops.

I work at the WH (my main office is by the World Bank, but I also am in the NEOB frequently), and I can usually get there in about 30 mins by train. In the summer months I've been driving though because the Metro has become more and more unreliable, and it is pretty miserable in the summer with the heat and tourists. I park in a garage a block from work, and I can expense it to my company.

DC streets are very easy to negotiate. Take five seconds to look at a map and you'll get it. The city is divided into quadrants, with the Capitol being the center. North-South streets are numbered, East-West are lettered and diagonal streets are states. And you have Constitution and Independence around the Mall.

Rents and home prices are a bit insane, but the market has shown signs of cooling. I'm paying about 1800/mo for a 1125 sq foot apartment, which includes all utilities and a spot in the parking garage. The further from a Metro stop, the cheaper it gets. There are several condo buildings in my area that have units selling anywhere from 300-500+k, with a fair number around 800-1mil and higher.

I have a car, but you might be able to get away with not having one in some neighborhoods. You could probably do without it in my neighborhood, and in neighborhoods in DC.

Silver Spring is near one end of the Red line, so it's a fair haul into downtown, but not terrible, espeically if you get a seat.

Judging a city by one criteria (crime) is stupid and ignorant. Any big city is going to have crime, you just have to learn what areas are safe and which are not. I have no problems walking around alone in most parts of DC late at night. You have to remember that DC has an enormous amount of law enforcement officers in a relatively small area. DC police, Secret Service Uniform Div, Capitol police, FBI, DHS, Protective Services, Park Police, etc. Most of Arlington (espcially the Wilson blvd corridor) is extremely safe as well.

As far as traffic, it is bad, but it is generally confined to several specific areas. The WW bridge, I95 south of the beltway, and certain sections of I66 are probably the worst. Rush hour here is approaching a perpetual state, the afternoon rush can easily go from 3-8pm. DC is also the motorcade capital of the world, so expect roads to be shutdown entirely without warning. The VP goes up and down Mass Ave/Conn Ave twice a day pretty much every day, and you'll see a lot of motorcades between the State dept and the WH, the Pentagon and WH (which would include I395, a major artery into DC) and the WH and Capitol Hill.

Enjoy 🙂

There are a large number of really nice neighborhoods along Conn Ave, all of them in DC.

Dupont Circle, Woodley Park, Cleveland Park, Tenleytown, Friendship Heights are all excellent places to live (but can be pricey), and they are all in DC and along the red line.

Connecticut ave isn't automatically MD just because it runs out to MD... Connecticut Ave runs through places like Farragut Square, which is an extremely nice area blocks from the white house, runs up through Adams Morgan, by the Zoo... You clearly have never been to Cleveland Park, Georgetown, Logan's Circle, Dupont Circle, Capital Hill, and none of those places are the "mall". I'm so tired of the wah wah, thats not DC thats MD thats VA... I'm not talking about VA or MD, I'm talking about DC... but not including places like Arlington when you're talking about DC is like saying Queens isn't part of NYC...

And besides... if you live in the DC Metro Area... places like Bethesda, Arlington, Crystal City, and others... are part of the DC experience...

As for having trouble finding beautiful places in DC... try the waterfront in Georgetown... or the historic Row houses in NE... or Rock Creek Park...

I still have to wonder why you, someone who is not from, or in DC, is giving someone advice about living in DC...

As for my not being banned... sorry to dissapoint you... but I'm still here, get over it.

Theres a decent apartment complex in downtown silver spring called summit hills. A few of my coworkers live there. It's about a 5 minute walk to the silver spring metro station.
