You guys will like this... Doomer's experience made me feel a bit nervous, so I ran the McAfee and Kaspersky scanners overnight, explorer.exe killed off in Safe Mode, etc.

Well, the McAfee scan found and moved Tool/nosh on my system. But the ironic thing is, the file is named shareBgon.bat and I made it myself (it deletes all shares from C$ through Z$, ADMIN$, PRINT$ and IPC$ at logon). LOL... who can you trust anymore? :D

Oh well, at least you have a virus scanner, lol. I'm too lazy to download one, plus I hate resource hogs. :p

Hehe :D Kaspersky is not too bad IMHO. But then, I'm accustomed to VirusScan Enterprise 8.0i and it rules with a fist of iron :Q You probably saw my FireFox launch-time results over in CPU/Overclocking for VSE8.0i versus Kaspersky versus nothing. It's a doozie!

Whew, what an ordeal.

Well, i'm back up with a frtesh install. Now I start down that long road to where i recognize my old friend again.

Here's my rationale for nuking it and starting from scratch ;

1. this install is about 3 years old so I thought it was about time. I used to have to reinstall Win98 at least once a year to keep it stable. Dunno if the same can be said for Win XP but what the hey.......

2. I was paranoid of the strangness I'd been experiencing latelay and figure that even if I did convince myself that it was gone, every time something happened, I'd have my doubts spring up again.

3. I had heard that the registry can only grow and never shrink. Over time it will grow and windows will begin to slow down due to the time it takes to load the registry. If anybody knows for sure, I'd appreciate some insight on this. :)

4. I really wanted to get Windows Update working again.

5. It's Labor Day and all i had to do was drink beer and play with Daisy.

At this point I have the Win XP installed and fully updated. I have Adaware, A-Squared, and Outpost installed.

Next step is to install Norton. Then I start on the apps.

This time, when I get everything loaded and configured, I'll create an image of the HD for future use, LOL. BTW: When it comes to imaging SW, Acronis Ture image is the best.

Well, time for another beer :D

yea but I took the hard way out. :D Besides, I wanted to make absolutely sure it was gone and the onlt way to do this was with a nuke.

It takes me a while to give up against spyware. As of now I have only one loss due to some reallllly weird IE exploit and I think I deleted the wrong thing somehow. Lemme tell you, that's rare. ;) I did fight off that spyware on my dad's PC which locked the home page and created alternate NTFS streams, other weird crap, and it just refused to budge, until it met my wrath. Viruses and spyware are afraid of me, so they rarely enter.

True, I might feel like reinstalling if I'd had that OS for 3 years too.

I have a full backup using Acronis and a backup of C using BootIt NG. They may get me, the demons!!, but I'll come right back (I hope). :D

he had to reinstall XP....ergo: Doomer 0 - Malware 1

complete re-isntall is like a capitulation....that's how i see it.

I am also surprised why he didnt use better tools, eg. for spyware Spy Sweeper, Seek and Destroy. He mentioned Ad-Aware...its good....but there might be better stuff out there.

Also...personally i dont like KAV (Kaspersky) but i am aware it has the best detectionm rate which includes Trojans/Malware etc....for such a hardcore infection i would at least run KAV just to see what it finds.

Anyway i hope he has better luck with the new install.
