Daylight saving time

there's an epidemic of incorrect time zone abbreviations right now.

in the summer, we're in daylight saving time. that shifts an hour from the morning to the afternoon. it's why solar noon in new orleans, LA (which is at 90.1 degrees west) is at 1:05 pm today.

proper abbreviations are EDT, CDT, MDT, and PDT. D for daylight.

That is so cringe worthy, that by itself I consider it grounds to eliminate the whole concept.
 
I'm in the time zone of "DGAF" and wish the whole concept of "Daylight savings" was scrapped.
 
I just use Eastern time or Central time, etc. since I assume the reader changed their clocks at the appropriate time.

As for foreigners, well, they don't really count, do they?
 
I'd like to keep Daylight Saving Time all year-round. I like it being lighter later in the evening.

BTW I only use 24hr time format. there is no such thing as 1 PM. :colbert:
 
I stopped using the appropriate DST time zone abbreviations when I finally got rid of my pocket protector and horn-rimmed glasses.
 
DST should be permanent year-round. Who doesn't like more sun?

Hell, I wouldn't care if it was 90 minutes ahead.

Unless you're a farmer, most people go to school/work at 8-9am and get out by 3pm & 5-7pm.

I hate it in the winter how you go to work at dark and get out of work at dark.

Who doesn't like enjoying drinks on a beautiful summer evening with the sun just setting after work? We can use more of that.

My german friend told me sun sets late as 9:10pm~ where she lives (Frankfurt). It's all beautiful with people enjoying outside after work.

move closer to the equator.

or live in northern europe from march to october and australia the rest of the year.

Yeah, up north the sun sets later. I think the latest it sets in Vancouver is around 9 pm or so.

and in stockholm, which is another 10 degrees north, 10 degrees east, and in the same time zone, it sets at 10 pm and comes back up at 4 am. nearly 21 hours of visible day, but that's due to its latitude. not because of mucking about with time zones.

I read before that they're actually NOT getting more total sun in a year. Does this mean they have much shorter days in winter? I can't imagine shorter days than US Northeast in Winter for big cities.

in reykjavik, some days in june the sun doesn't set in the evening. it sets in the morning the next day.

Every place on earth averages 182.5 days worth of sun each year (12 hours of 365 days).

At the poles that's a mix of 24 hours of sun in the summer with 24 hours of dark in the winter. Near the equator it's much closer to 12/12 every day.

On the vernal and autumnal equinoxes, every place on earth has a 12 hour day.

When I was in high school back in the late 80s we went to this place in northern Norway right in the middle of June when sunset was close to midnight and sunrise was at around 3am. We played soccer in the yard at 11pm. That was a pretty cool experience 😀
 
Wow you scared me, I thought this was a PSA to move clocks again. Was going to say, is it really that time already? I know summer is almost over but geez lol.

Where I live sun sets around 10pm and rises around 5am, it's actually surreal to see the sun coming out when I'm not even in bed yet. 😛

Then in winter we pretty much don't see the sun. Dark when you go to work and dark when you finish. Sucks. Even when the sun is "out" it's behind clouds.
 
I always specific CDT or CST or EDT or EST etc etc... Its very easy to know what time zone one is in, and if it is daylight time or standard time.

That said, I would like to put an end to the plague known as daylight savings time.

We bother because lots and lots of businesses have to spend money to change their clocks twice a year, or reprogram their software to change them at pre-determined times twice a year.

We bother because it costs even more for the government to make changes.

Thing is, we DID change it a few years back, instead of changing it, it should have just been abolished altogether. All software had to be updated anyway.

I blame Bush.
