Considering picking this game up, but have long since abandoned my desktop computers (actually, turned them into media center PCs).

What kind of hardware are we talking to run this game at 1680x1050 (I assume at high detail unless thats unreasonable).

Just ballpark wise - something like an AMD combined APU, $150 graphics card, or $300 graphics card?

A $150 card should run it fine on medium-ish settings. With integrated graphics, don't bother.

i5-2300/GTX 460 1GB ran it rather well at high settings and 1080p. No AA obviously.

I can't tell you how the 670 runs it because I haven't been able to connect all weekend. I have the 1.7 Dayz patch and the latest Arma2 beta patch... no go.

Gotcha, thanks. I have an older Ati 4850 from my last desktop thats not doing anything. I was thinking of setting up a system using that, and if that wasn't powerful enough then ordering something else to go with the new CPU.

Kind of scary that a game that is for sale has over 50 patches and is still buggy (Arma II not DayZ). I think I finally figured out my issue though and am working through it. Might get to actually play this sometime today..

Tell me about it, died more from bugs than actual zombies/people so far. 😛

Well, I spent over an hour this morning dicking around with this mod. Never did get it to work. Or rather, got it to work but could never get it to connect properly to a game. I'll try it again when they fix some bugs....

Yah bugs seems to come up a lot. I just all of a sudden started getting random black screen bug when playing. I get into game, everything works, just monitor goes black for some reason. No clue on how to fix it.

The six-updater/launcher is a life saver for keeping up to date.... it will pull the latest patch, download, unzip, and place all the files in the correct location.... and if a server is running an older version it will allow you to sync to that version.

... and you can launch into a server through it without having to open the game first (similar to a steam/origin setup).... I highly recommend this updater for the game, saves a lot of headaches.

Post processing enabled on low and it does not cut my frames in half....runs very nice to be honest, with the draw distanced maxed out.

It's not really difficult, it's just that there are different versions of Arma, different versions of the Mod and different servers are running different versions of each. That was where my problem was. It doesn't just tell you "wrong version" You actually get into the server but are just frozen or gives you non helpful error messages.

If you use the updater tool, then it will take you to the latest version, in which case you need to go get the Arma beta patch and look for servers running that patch or you won't be able to play on any of the 1.7 servers.

Not sure if serious...Just a hunch, but it's probably night time on that server...

I am playing the newest arma beta and dayz 1.7 and I don't really have any glaring problems. Just the known issues, i.e. Zombies attacking through walls, etc.

I like the idea of the game but am turned away by the scarcity of weapons and ammo. I find myself just using the default handgun until I run out of ammo...

can someone clarify the files needed for dayz? went to the main site but the files were pretty small..?

http://us.armafiles.info/

also, i bought retail off of amazon. can i still use steam and add the game?

Yes, in total the mod files are about 90mb. I would suggest using the installer or auto updater mentioned in the OP to keep things neat.
The key you got from Amazon will not activate on steam, also be sure to update ArmA II to the latest patch (or beta patch) before playing.

Is Arma2 worth buying just for this game? In other words, just to play DayZ and not Arma2 itself.

Not full price, IMHO. I felt the $15 I paid when it was on sale was worth it though.

Check deer stands for higher grade weapons or check barns, grocery stores and churches for a Winchester and a M1911 pistol.
The Winny isn't great, but ammo is plentiful and it is less loud than the CZ550 and Lee Enfield. The 1911 will kill zombies with one shot and ammo is fairly easy to find.

Absolutely. To give you some perspective, I payed $30 just so I could play Day Z (no interest in vanilla Arma II). I now already have over 30 hours logged in the game, with no plans of stopping anytime soon.

Of course, everyone is going to value it differently; so different people will give you different responses to that question. It depends on personal preference and how much the idea of Day Z really appeals to you.

Is there a way to track Steam prices and set a price alert for sales?
