Day of Defeat: Source nearing beta, coming early spring.

IGN article.

Posted here for quick reading:
Along with the breakthrough of Half-Life 2, Valve promised its new engine would also power re-builds of classic Half-Life mods like Counter-Strike and Day of Defeat. We've been playing Counter-Strike: Source for months now, of course, but little has been said about the new version of Defeat, the WWII modification.

Today, Valve finally broke silence. The company announces that Day of Defeat: Source is now approaching beta, and the final version should be available "early this spring" via the Steam service.

As with Counter-Strike: Source, Valve is giving Day of Defeat a full make-over using all the tasty tricks of the Source engine. The battle in Western Europe will now feature advanced physics, completely new audio, enhanced effects, and updated maps. Two first screenshots give you a sense of the change.

Steam users will be able to order Day of Defeat: Source when it's released this spring. Gamers who ordered the Silver or Gold Half-Life 2 packages via Steam should receive Day of Defeat: Source automatically when it's available.
Wonder how much they'll sell it for those who only got the bronze edition or regular retail package?

Pretty damn lame that they have taken this long to port that game to the source engine. Numerous people essentially gave Valve a multi-month interest free loan for this by purchasing the upgraded steam packages over just the base HL2 (and if the forums are any indication, a big factor for those upgraded packages was to get DoD source).

I'd say this is pretty lame. I purchased the silver package under the impression that I would have to wait a couple months until I get the 2nd half of what I purchased. Now I find out that it's coming out in EARLY SPRING? Over a year from when I purchased this program. What a Rip!

I love HL2.

Whatever.

Wow, I'd forgot about posting this thread. I guess it has been some time without any word on it's release. It is kind of crappy that it's been 6 months now, and we still don't have what we paid for. BUT, we did know it was available at the time of purchase, and we bought without knowing a release. Plus, I probably won't play it. But it's the principle of it!!

Same DoD with better graphics. Nothing to get excited about.

Au contraire. That's the exact reason to get excited. CS:S is ok to pass the time until DoD:S
comes out, but after that CS:S will just gather dust. At least on my system.

A GAME COMPANY FOR ONCE IS TRYING MAKE SURE A GAME IS COMPLETED BEFORE RELEASING IT

I, for one, am very happy that a company has the balls to do this. If they had released it with their original plans it would have sucked. Originally it was going to be all the same art and essentially the same graphics as the original DOD. But they reworked the entire thing, so it should be promising.

CrackRabbit:

From Valve? Not for a long time, probably never. But I do believe there is a 3rd party mod group working on it right now. I cant remember the name though.

LOL :) I finaly picked up the retail copy of HL2 from Fry's when it went on sale for $29.99, a week or 2 ago. Its nifty but there are things that valve needs to fix in it before moving on to other projects such as DoD or an update of HL1
The main thing that I think is annoying is the headcrab zombies, all of them are wearing white labcoats... City 17 != Black Mesa I have also run into a few MAJOR graphical glitches that should of been fixed by now.
