The long awaited update to Day of Defeat Source has been released. It is just a Beta but at least they are getting close.

Day of Defeat Source: Beta

A new update adding support for Steamworks is currently available in beta for Day of Defeat: Source, the popular World War II online action game from Valve, creators of the Half-Life and Counter-Strike games.
Leveraging the recently released free set of services available in Steamworks, the Day of Defeat update will add 51 achievements for DoD, player avatar display in the scoreboard and win panel, and detailed player statistics integrated with the Steam Community features (www.steamcommunity.com).

This update also adds support for popular features introduced in Valve's Team Fortress 2 (TF2), the PC title named multiplayer game of the year by Gamespy.com and PC Gamer. These include "nemesis/revenge" freeze cam and new effects driven by the particle system introduced to the Source engine for TF2.

In addition, this update will also introduce a new map, dod_Palermo, which is a remix of the most popular community map, dod_salerno.

Owners of Day of Defeat: Source, retail and Steam versions, may join the beta free of charge.

I am JUMPING OUT OF MY SKIN FOR THIS! Been waiting so long, thought it would never come. Normal Valve though.

Cool, downloading it now.

I was  when I read the thread title though

edit: apparently they will be updating CSS with a new version also, there's a filter for it in the server browser.

Looks the same, plays about the same, but just stole TF2's achievement and nemesis/dominated theme. Not impressed.

Title isn't really accurate... DoD:S has been out in retail for quite sometime. This is just a beta for the steamworks part of it.

Booo! I like the registration better. It's laggy but that will be worked out. The explosions look much better IMO and thats from the TF2 engine. The new map added looks good, just an updated version of salerno.

How is it not accurate? When you download it from your "steam games list" its listed as " Day of Defeat: Source Beta". If this is not correct, how should the title be then?

Good job Valve! Start adding the lame ass nemesis feature to other games, and watch those plummet like TF2.

Maybe someday Valve will see that some people just want to relax a bit in the evening and don't need additional competitive bullshit shoved in there face while they're online. You know it is okay to die in a FPS and still have a good time. The more you give that death a face the less attractive the game becomes to casual gamers.

Maybe the next step will be claustrophobic TF2 style maps, where everyone spawns in one room, so they can get to the action quickly.

damn, some tf2 haters in here

It is a cluster funk whether you like it or not.

Really? TF2? I think you'd find that lots of just about everyone else will disagree with you on that point.

I agree with him, its TOO chaotic and that removes from the strategy which would be possible

I'm thinking you should skip Valve games all together and find yourself a nice grammar game.

Yea, I'd like to see this adopted in CS:S, which is really competitive and looks kinda dated compared to most newer multiplayer shooters.

I have said it before. I hate TF2's damage system where everyone can kill everyone else in seconds, no matter the weapon, no matter the class.
Scouts that can kill with bats in a few hits that you can't get away from = bad gameplay.
I have been at full health as a pyro, and someone shoots me dead in 1.5 seconds, non sniper. There is no defense from that.
It is too twitchy.

CS and CS:S are amazing games, and are really pretty fun to play in a relaxed fashion. Sure you'll get some screamers from time to time but a good group approaching it calmly will pwn. It's ultimately the players that create the environment, not the game itself forcing some tit for tat rivalry.

So yeah, the smack talk servers exist, but you'll also have some tactical masterpiece's as well, and at least it's based on the dynamic between the players, not the game engine suggesting to you how to behave from round to round.

I personally can't stand TF2 anymore and watching the server stats suggests I'm not alone.

Those stats are BS.

A. there's no way there are more people playing Q3 arena than TF2
B. According to that graph, there are 3x more people playing Day of Defeat than TF2. using the steam server browser, there are 600 servers in TF2 that have at least 1 user playing. In Day of Defeat, there are only 400.
C. when valve had the player stats on their website (they pulled them for some reason) TF2 had over 10,000 players active at its busiest time of day.

you must be awful if you get your ass handed to you like that, don't blame the game and your lack of understanding of the fundementals/basics of gameplay. There are servers out there that have no crits.

Is it just me or the beta servers crash constantly? And why didn't they add assists in? I've always hated not getting credit for shooting someone with a garand then have him die to a random thompson spray right after.

TF2 forces you to play a style that lot of people just don't like. Its a matter of preference. I think TF2 could be slowed down a bit and turned into something much better but a lot of people would be very upset so it isnt going to happen and shouldnt happen.

theres no forcing and i'm not sure why you feel that way but, the other versions of TF are much more faster paced. TF2 imo is much more slower paced then the predecessors (QWTF, ETF) and at the same time can be more strategic in clan matches versus pubs FFA

Your comment comes off harsh. Read it again.
Starting off with "you must be aweful" attacking the person is no way to offer assistance.
I have no defense against the type of damage that people can do in this game. I would prefer the pace of TFC over this.
Too bad TFC servers are filled with bots now.

with your comment "As i've said it before.. blah blah blah" your're making no valid points other than a once in a while crit to the face and your lack of movement abilities to dodge attacks and that it's too twitchy, but what TF version isn't? I tend not to blame games if i'm not good at them whereas, others might.
