What's even funnier is that they won't implement it because of budget constraints, so they will hire the consultant again next year to tell them the same thing.

Heh... I've always wondered about IT consultants ... shouldn't they be technical and well-rounded ? Are most of them ? Never dealt with any...

I thought they should be the upper echelon of the IT ladder since they are supposed to be well-versed in almost anything companies want to have solutioned. They should have tons of years of experience... yet I see people right out of school working as consultants... WTF ?!

I think this is what CEO's think too. But the reality usually falls on the other end of the scale, consultants are people who are very versed in industry buzz words but have no knowledge to back them up. They know whats trendy, but dont know what is technically worthy.

while it may be true that some consulting firms suck, not all of them are useless. i'm working as a consultant right now, i admit, i'm a bit young and still learning, but the older more experienced people really know their technical stuff. and not everyone is necessarily good at everything, we have sql gurus, c++ gurus, VB gurus, management gurus, and we combine them to create a well rounded team.

a client that i'm working with probably said it best. 'you get what you pay for'. we charge a lot, but we produce results. they're really happy with our deliverables. they've definately had problems with 'cheaper' consultants, not producing and meeting deadlines.

Deliverables? Are you a consultant or a contractor? All a consultant does is come in and give management their opinion on how to improve things. They dont have any "deliverables".
