Yes base building is fun, but the direction that DOW 2 was moving to was superior. A TBS campaign with strategic movement, base building, and unit training, combined with the RTS battles, is a perfect system that unfortunately is insufficiently used in video games today.

Or perhaps not all strategy gamers agree with your opinion.

Only 3 races? Thankfully my most hated OP pairing of Tyranids and Necrons aren't in but a game without Chaos feels like Luke without Darth, Sonny without Cher... I'm going to find some Daemonettes to play with once I've finished my Khorne Flakes.

In the trailer? Those were not Titans. They were Knights... about 1.5-2 times the size of a Dread. I think the Eldar were Wraithknights which I believe are the Eldar equivalent of their Imperial counterparts, that step above the Wraithlord/Dreadnought.

Then what would they put in their four expansion packs :p

But hopefully a new last stand will also be included.

What was the Last Stand again?
A multiplayer mode?

EDIT: Oh, a 3-player survival mode...nice. Can this be played solo with 2 A.I. "friends" ?

You cannot play The Last Stand with A.I., unfortunately. Well, perhaps I should say fortunately instead. It requires good coordination to have a successful match (all 20 waves completed). I don't think that any A.I. would do that, they'd just rambo on the closest targets available. That's not even mentioning the different builds for each heroes and how game-play styles differ according to the weaponry and accessories you equip. With this said, however, some accessories for your hero grant you an A.I. unit (or more than one in some cases) to your side to aid you (and the team in general), for support and/or enemy distraction.

In my opinion, The Last Stand is the best part of Dawn of War 2 (typical skirmishes are alright though). I play it almost daily, at least two or three matches each session. The only hero I do not own is the Tau commander since I never bothered buying it (he looks fun though), but I have all others. I like all of them for different reasons, but my favorites are the Chaos Sorcerer, the Imperial Lord General and the Eldar Farseer. Now, with this said, there is a negative point to the Last Stand mode: there's only two maps. Namely, the Bloodied Colosseum, and The Anvil of Khorne. My personal favorite is definitely The Anvil of Khorne. The 'special' thing about Colosseum, however, is Wave #15, it's a mirror match (all three heroes are 'cloned' and you fight yourselves; the clones have the exact same build as you and your two allies as well).

I simply adore The Last Stand, and I HOPE that they'll bring it back for Dawn of War 3... with more than two maps. But I also hope that they keep the 3 heroes formula and don't turn in into a 5+ heroes mode with maps that would be too big and unbalanced. The one thing I wish they'd include would be Waves customization. If they do that, to any extent, I'll be in heaven.

I'm not really an RTS nor Warhammer fan, but that trailer was bad-assed.

And I thought it was the most lacklustre Dawn of War video to date :)

Even the anti-fluff Orks destroying Predator and Dreadnought opening of Dawn of War 1 back in 2003'ish'ish was better imo :)

Am I the only one who is worried when they claim it will be "the most accessible RTS yet"?

To me, that just says they've dumbed it down so that even a newborn squirrel could pick it up and play just fine. The games weren't all that complicated in the first place so I'm concerned what they are going to remove so it will be "accessible".

Didn't notice that however it could be marketing speak too.

The gameplay leaves me whelmed. The affront to lore leaves me overwhelmed.

I get the MechWarrior Online vibes of sorts. Has the IP, uses stuff that looks right, sounds right but uses it in such a way that it could be any <genre> game out there.

Sure, the Eldar aren't exactly taking down SM's left, right and centre but for SM's to deploy a Chapter Master, an Imperial Knight, 2 Dreadnoughts, multiple Tactical/Assault/Devastator squads AND Assault Terminators on top of that.... COME ON!

gameplay looks like League of Legends crossed with a top down hack'n'slasher. not sure where the "strategy" part of RTS comes in...

anyone remembers Warhammer: Dark Omen? now that was a Strategy game! your performance in every mission impacted the next missions which made it much more difficult.

Yeah Dark Omen was a blast. Remember the first time I managed to run the final boss over with the steam tank :D

DoW III looks like a mix of starcraft 2 and Warcraft 3.

Exactly my thoughts after watching last night. I'm not really a fan of hero units. While it's exciting to have an OP unit sometimes, I would rather have more RTS in my RTS...

I like the idea of adding cover kind of like Act of War... I wonder if units will get promoted?

Slightly OT:
Say, what was that RTS that came out a few years decade(?) ago where you could manually take control of units on the battlefield, effectively changing to an FPS at will?

Probably not the one but Battlezone (1998) did that pretty much. Based on the 1980 original and redone this year as Battlezone 98 Redux.

Cover was introduced into the franchise with previous titles. As for the promotions, in the videos it looks like units will get promoted but I didn't listen to much of the commentary to see if that's what it was.

i think its a good blend of DOW1 and 2. I didn't like the squad/hero focus of DOW2, and the cover system was so cumbersome. Having dedicated cover points via capture makes life simple while retaining their strategic value.
