Hi All,

So, I just came upon this game today via Gamestop's PC games email. It sounds like an interesting and well done spin on the city building game. Before I spend $50 on steam to buy it, anybody that's played it have any thoughts?

Almost bought it yesterday. Ended up picking overlord 2 instead. Kind of regret it now. Overlord 2 is more of a pain in the ass than it is fun.

It has a 3 machine activation limit, which places it firmly on the Do Not Buy list.

Just read the review, looks good as I've been waiting for something like this- I'll have a bit more of read of reviews but I can see myself picking this up tomorrow in my lunch break.

This is the latest game from the "anno" series. This probably my favorite series of games. If you're into these kinds of games, it's definitely worth the $50. Be careful though, unless you've played a game from the series before, there's a decent learning curve. Basically, you really need to balance your resources, production, and population. There's guides out there.

isn't that pretty much the point of these types of games?

I'll wait until it comes down to $19.99, which should be by Christmas time.

I have been eyeballing this for a long time. Never felt like making a thread about it though.
Now that I know the price and DRM issues, I will wait.

btw is that 3 simultaneous activations or 3 activations period, as in I can only redownload the game from steam 3 times?

I doubt the steam version has an install limit. The only reason they cap it is to prevent it from being pirated and installed on 5000 different machines. Steam is pretty secure (queue all the steam haters in 5...4...3...2...1...)

3 activations period, then you beg for another from Customer Service, if there's not a revoke tool available.

The Steam version has the install limit as well. DRM like this does not stop piracy, it encourages it. Recall the Spore Debacle. Most Pirated Game In History.

Games such as X3: Terran Conflict on steam (which uses TAGES) has a 5 install limit, whereas the DVD version has only a CD check. It is even listed on Steam itself what DRM it uses and what limits there are (find the game, look under the metascore bar on the right).

For Dawn of Discovery it clearly lists "3rd-party DRM: TAGES? 3 machine activation limit".

Do your homework.

I played the last one and it was good. The graphics are very well done for a game of it's type and there are city building elements, but for me there wasn't a lot of detail.

You can download the demo and try it out. I actually have it but haven't had a chance to play it.

Well, its not *bad* per say, it really depends on how often/much you change your hardware. But generally speaking, if you format without first uninstalling the game, there goes 1 activation. Change too much hardware, there goes another activation. Its draconian really.
