??? He never got the Tonight show. That and he did the same setup/gags at CBS, just renamed them due to legal reasons.

Let alone the first couple years he told jokes that Johnny Carson wrote for him sometimes.

my bad - you're right about the Tonight Show. I'll stick to my guns on how I think he changed when he went to CBS. Same gags & stuff, sure... but its like the edge was gone

From 1998-2004 I might casually tune in to his show. Seemed he'd make a joke, it would fall flat, then he'd chuckle. It was painful at times. Top 10 was mostly weak. And the colors on that show were washed out, unlike the vibrant colors on the Tonight Show. Overall his show just seemed bland.

At least it wasn't 3rd-grader humor like Conan.

I used to love his show in the 80's. And for a show in the genre of The Tonight Show, it had a lot of originality, in addition to the guests. Stupid Human Tricks, Chris Elliot (Guy under the Stairs), Pet tricks, heading down to the deli, etc.

Been watching him since I was a kid. He started his late night shows around the time I was born. I was really into him around the junior high and maybe high school years. For the past few years, I was tuning in only if Colbert wasn't on or there was an interesting guest -- started watching most of his show when Colbert ended. He's good and likable, the stand-up jokes never really did it for me, it was the skits and his trolling of unknowing people that I loved. Think he stopped doing as much of that stuff lately.

Craig Ferguson was the only one I really loved. He just didn't give a shit and everything, including the interviews, seemed unscripted... Never really gave Leno a chance, Kimmel's okay, James Corden is pretty good, Seth Myers is passable, love Conan, can't stand Fallon.

What about Chevy Chase? :'(

I remember a VERY long time ago there was a bit where someone put a donkey or a horse or...some stupid kind of farm animal in Dave's dressing room or maybe it was the green room?

Anyways the thing pooped all over.

Does anyone remember this? Can anyone find a link? Did I dream this up during an alcohol fueled dream decades ago and this is firm proof that I am insane?
I believe you're thinking of the cow cam. The monkey cam was more entertaining.
People are calmer and less stressed when they're more aerobically fit. He may have calmed down after the heart surgery by getting into better shape.

I think the Tonight Show was the 1st to broadcast in HDTV (1999 according to a quick search) so better source material may technically be a reason colors looked brighter.
