David Letterman’s last ‘Late Show’ is tonight

I like Dave simply because of how he stuck up for Conan.

I have no idea if he or his show are still good.

I hear Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning will be a guest.

Rather unemotional farewell. Thought he'd choke up a bit, but nope. He was rock solid.

He's big on not showing emotion. I think he was also trying to stay strong for his son in the audience. I admit I didn't get choked up until he said to his wife and son "I love you guys and that's all that matters."

I get the feeling he's retiring so he can be there for his son. Dave's 68 and had a kid late in life, and he knows he's only got a good 10-15 good years left.

Anyway, fantastic show. The Dreyfus/Seinfeld bit during the Top Ten List was the best thing ever 😀

I always preferred Leno to Letterman. Still watched the last show. First half of it anyway. Recorded the rest. Can't miss a piece of TV history like that.

Yes, the Dreyfus/Seinfeld bit was great. The look Jerry gave her was priceless. I wonder if that was planned. 😀

I remember a VERY long time ago there was a bit where someone put a donkey or a horse or...some stupid kind of farm animal in Dave's dressing room or maybe it was the green room?

Anyways the thing pooped all over.

Does anyone remember this? Can anyone find a link? Did I dream this up during an alcohol fueled dream decades ago and this is firm proof that I am insane?

Letterman's humor had little depth...the joke typically was the punchline with little lead-in. His top ten lists were always aired on radio stations because of how quick they could steal his jokes to fill air time. It's really what kept him in second place all those years. That's ok, but I had trouble watching a lot of it.

I also preferred Leno and Conan in the old days when he was just happy to be there.

This and I believe Dave is not the guy for youtube prank videos and such. He probably is too tired to compete with the new guys and I don't blame him. He has been successful enough not to have to bother any longer.

I think a lot of people, esp younger ones, do not realize that Dave was the "edgy" late night person in his day. Carson thought he was more edgy then him but still fit the late night classic mold, that is why Carson wanted Dave to get the tonight show.

I think Dave is the last of his generation. Now host have to be zany or put out material that can survive a 3minute youtube/cell phone video.

I had no idea that Letterman had been on for 33 years ... mainly because I cannot recall ever watching a single show.

🙂

He's freely admitted he doesn't understand Twitter and other social media. He gets how useful it can be, but sharing himself and his personal moments goes against every fiber of his being.

I was a huge fan of his way back in the days of Late Night with David Letterman (my high school & college years)

But he changed a lot when he got the Tonight Show and then later the Late Show. I've been kind of indifferent to him ever since.

??? He never got the Tonight show. That and he did the same setup/gags at CBS, just renamed them due to legal reasons.

Let alone the first couple years he told jokes that Johnny Carson wrote for him sometimes.

He was essentially the same Dave until the late 90's, when he started getting therapy. After his heart surgery he lost a lot of his energy and became more of a curmudgeon. Once in a while the old Dave would peek out, but he pretty much lost himself at the turn of the century for some reason.
