DaveB3D states that the V5 is as fast as the GTS...

To tell you the truth, with those screenshots being that small, I can't really tell the difference between the two. Besides the fact that the "normal" shot seems to have a few splotches of color on the back wall, I see nothing different.

Sorry they have HUGE yellow splotches all of the wall that AREN'T supposed to be there.

I made the picture small for bandwidth limited people.

There are many levels with this type of errors all around it.

I noticed it immediatly after getting the GTS because of having a V5 before.

Even on the specail S3TC levels made for the ViperII their are texture compression errors.

Actually Dave, I did have a P3V4X with that system (now I have a CUSL-2). And the only "advanced option" that I changed was to disable v-sync.

I'll do some more benchmarks tomorrow when I get my new cpu. I'm not in the mood to reinstall Q3 tonight. 😉

Interesting. So in other words, you are getting lower scores than the V5 is capable of getting. Could it be faster than the GTS then? Hrm.. I guess we'll have to see (I'm curious about this myself... 🙂).

And while we're at it, do you guys have NOTHING better to do than to sit around and benchmark Q3 all day? I seriously believe that you guys run timedemos more than you actually play the games. It seems that it is nothing more than an expensive benchmark utility for most.

And Q3 is not the only benchmark out there for gods sake!

-Still, nVidia needs to fix that crap 😉

IBMer, those are some interesting screen shots. I always used to be in the crowd who said that they couldn't notice the difference between the two, but in those two photos, it is VERY clear..

Heh, NFS4... Well, I haven't benchmarked Q3 since I ran those six weeks ago. But yeah, since the game generally sucks, it is just a benchmark for me. 😉

Dave, I should get higher results with this CUSL-2 also. But we'll see (hopefully tomorrow).

Dave, all i hafta say is WOW!! when u put that side by side comparison up, u can totally tell the difference. it's more than i thought before...i mean who wouldn't sacrifice a little fps for some good quality. I myself have used the radeon and the gts (now) the radeon is much better, i heard that the v5 5500 is even better than that.

WOW!!

and to think.. I got attacked for making the claim. 🙂

Well lets just wait for tomorrow. I'm going to go in early and run some tests and I'll throw up some comparision scores.

Dave, you got a little overly problem with the normal picture in your side. I looks like you have two pictures on that on.

EDIT

Never mind you outlined the problem areas.

Also, I am borring a V5 from a friend to do some testing with the new drivers, to compare against my GTS.

I have:

1Ghz T-bird
A7V
256MB of CAS2 PC133.

I think it would be a good comparison.

BTW, also if Ben wants to come in here and complain about how there is slight texture compression problems with the V5 as well. There is VERY slight problems, but also Wicked GL gets rid of that and also speeds up the V5 in Q3 by a bit too.

the link is working..just tried it now...like ten times! =) i am anxiously awaiting tommrow...i want to know asap if i should throw this gts out the window (not literally) ive been deciding on a radeon or a v5, i borrowed the radeon, and i love it! but im gonna see if the v5 is worth it too...

The power of the V5...if any of you fly flight sims, you'll notice how much better the V5 does FSAA than the GeForce.

/me kisses V5

I just did some benchmarking myself.

I have a 64MB GTS from Asus, the Pure model running the 6.32 drivers in WinMe.

I also have a V5 5500 borrowed from a friend, running the 1.04 drivers in WinME.

My main system is a 1Ghz Athlon T-bird with 256MB of CAS 2 PC133 RAM and a A7V with the latest Bios.

I used the exact settings on the V5 that Dave had suggested.

On the GTS, I enabled Anisotropic Filtering and turned off Texture compression in Q3. I think that setting is comparible to the out put of the V5, plus with a 64MB GTS there shoulding be that much of a hit( at least I thought).

1024x768x32...

98fps GTS w/ Texture Compression and Anisotropic Filtering off, HQ settings.
83fps GTS w/ Texture Compression off and Anisotropic Filtering on, HQ settings.
76fps GTS w/ MAX Details set in Q3.

Funny how the reviews never show this side of things.

82fps V5 w/ just driver options changed HQ settings.
77fps V5 w/ MAX Details set in Q3.

Keep in mind that I own a GTS and not a V5.

The V5 is borrowed from a friend.

I did clean installs for both tests.

Hmmm, that's pretty interesting stuff there IBMer. As a V5 owner myself I think this is great. I don't fully understand why so many sites like to bash 3dfx. Maybe one of them will post some kind of an update or something. I just read somewhere the other day in a Video Card review that the V5 was way behind the other cards and priced too high. It's ashame that uninformed people out there will miss out on what really is a nice card. And the FSAA truly is addictive. I swithed to a Radeon and had to come back to my V5. Just can't play without atleast 2x anymore. Thanks for the honest review. And just out of curiousity, you using DX7 or DX8? I know Q3 is OGL, just curious.

What I want to know is why did everyone bash me when I went to tell everyone???????????????????????????????????????? huh? I got flamed to ALL hell. 🙂

Maybe next time people might consider what I'm saying!! 🙂

Its easier to fly off the handle without thinking 😉

Anyways thanks for the info dave. I think I will be playing with my friends V5 5500 this weekend.

this forums isn't necessarily all about facts. I learned that the hard way as an Avid AMD supporter back in the day when AMD only had the K6-2 🙂

however, people will still nock the V5 simply because of it not including all the features we all want (T&L), making it 'inferior' to nVidia products.

however, having seen this here today, I can safely tell people that the V5 is ok to buy, it's not that slow, however I still have to take into account lack of T&L (however useful it might be on current nVidia unit's we'll see).
