Dave Matthews Band - Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King

So far the reviews have been positive. I'm a casual fan of the group, but I was really disappointed with Stand Up, so I'm still on the fence about this new album. Has anyone given it a listen yet?

I quit listening to DMB when I went to college (ala 2003)

But... Stand Up was awful. This is better, way better than Stand Up.

Ever since they ditched their producer Lillywhite (whose last work with them was basically Busted Stuff), I quit listening to them... mainly because of their solos are now gone. The music has gone more mainstream this could be because of their new label or the bands direction of "Hey we are getting older and don't want to put on 3+ hour shows with half it being solos".

Still my favorite no solos album is Everyday

Haven't heard it yet, but plan on getting it.

It took a long time for me to warm up to Stand Up, but I like a few tracks off it now.

Love it so far. I particularly like Time Bomb, but the very last line/seconds of that particular song are a bit to Creed-like for my tastes. Other than that, good album -- much better than Stand Up. But to me, Before These Crowded Streets will always be their best studio album.

On a side note, did anyone see them on Jimmy Fallon last night? It was awesome -- and I especially like Jimmy digging back to his SNL days to mimic Dave with the Dave Matthews Band GPS 🙂

They're gonna be on the Today Show tomorrow morning.

solid album

It does. GrooGrux King was the name of the sax player who passed away. It's a tribute to him. So the name isn't as stupid as it seems.

I've been listening to the XM/Sirius Dave Matthews Channel that they made for the release and they play a lot of the new songs. I mean its ok, but it really isn't great in my opinion. When you compare any of the new stuff they have made to the first style of work they did, it really is nothing close to as good. I mean Crash, Crowded Streets, Lilly White Sessions, Under the table, these are amazing albums. Everyday was ok as it grew on me, but these new albums are different than that.

I'm a big DMB fan, and I don't think the new album is very good at all, especially compared to Crash and Under The Table and Dreaming. It just doesn't have any songs that stand out. And while I agree that Stand Up wasn't one of their best albums, it is still full of good songs. Old Dirt Hill is probably one of my favorite Dave songs, period.

The last album they put out was pure garbage.

Dave's voice has gone to shit with all his drinking and drug abuse. It's beyond hoarse.

I'm the type that miss Dave's long, deep songs like Seek Up, Dreaming Tree (my favorite song in the whole friggin' world) and Crush.

And I love Jam songs like Two Step, Warehouse, and Dancing Nancies... none of the more recent stuff after Lillywhite/Busted Stuff really jump out at me as being those types of "jam" songs other than Hello Again.

The two best songs of the entire DMB catalog, IMO.

I agree completely. Dreaming Tree is an awesome song..one of the only songs I haven't seen played live that I wanted to see.

Crush is also amazing.

The new stuff...its just not the same. Which, you know is to be expected from a band that is around for so long. They grow and change, and the audience doesn't always go with them.

I picked this up last week and I've given it a few listens. I think it's very good, and I'm enjoying it far more than I did their last few efforts.
