This was crazy news to me even though it was announced 2 days ago, I didn't hear until this morning.

They are a pretty big radio staple in the metro Detroit area. Guess they got a sweet offer to work elsewhere, still in Detroit:

Link
The longtime 89X morning duo Dave and Chuck the Freak are off the air, apparently for good from the Windsor-based station.

They announced on their Facebook page this morning that their show is no more via this message:

"Unfortunately we can't go into detail, but as of today the Dave and Chuck "the Freak" show is no longer a part of the 89X line up. We greatly enjoyed our time at 89X for over a decade, made some great friends, and are so thankful we got to be a part of your lives every morning. We have the best listeners in the world, and you guys entertained us as much as we entertained you."

They no longer appear on the 89X web page, and the station's online schedule has nothing listed for a weekday morning show.

The station's official Twitter page, however, has tweets saying the duo quit: "Yes it's true that Dave and Chuck have quit. They made the decision to leave 89X, but we roll on! Thanks for listening."

In the radio business, that sometimes indicates a show's hosts have found a better deal at another station. Another possibility is unfavorable contract negotiations drove them off the air. That said, why Dave Hunter and Charles Urquhart are gone remains unclear.

UPDATE: A Windsor Star blog item this morning suggests the station's owner were unwilling to match an offer from another, unnamed, station to move the show.

The show, which first began airing in April 2001, is also co-hosted by Lisa Way.

Rerun shows had been playing for at least the past week. It normally aired in morning drive-time from 5:30 to 10 a.m., and their show was often touted on highway billboards in metro Detroit.

89X is the largely alt-rock station's on-air branding for CIMX-FM 88.7 FM. It's 100,000-watt signal covers Windsor, metro Detroit, Toledo and can be picked up in northeast Ohio.

The station is part of Bell Media Radio, which owns 35 Canadian station. It's a unit of Montreal-based telecom giant Bell Canada, a significant piece of BCE Inc., which had more than $19 billion (Canadian dollars; NYSE: BCE) in revenue last year.

The station directed calls about the show to Tania D'Angela, the programming assistant for Bell Media's local stations (which include 93.9 FM The River, CKLW
800 AM and CKWW 580 AM). A message was left for her.

One of those strange changes as they had been on the air for a decade. I hope 89x can rebound.

Noooooooooooo! I usually enjoy their show on my way to work in the morning. I thought they were just playing re-runs because they were on vacation for the holidays or something. I hope they are just moving to another local radio station :(

Heard this a few days ago. Honestly I'm not sure why it was such a highly rated show. Seemed like a cookie cutter morning show with a bit of edge, but not too much.

Bell has been going on a buying spree. They're trying to gobble up all the TV and radio stations rival Rogers doesn't own. Lot of people lost their jobs that way. Lots of stations got retooled. They shut down the legendary CHUM-AM in Toronto and converted it to all-news, which failed. It's now sports talk. Rogers got the TV side of CHUM in that deal and wrecked everything that made it great.

I've done work with Rogers and they're a pretty decent company. At least at the time. I've heard mixed things about Bell. Given their general abusive attitude towards their telco customers and predatory monopolizing, they need to be reigned in by the CRTC. Fortunately the government is starting to say no to them. They got denied permission to purchase Astral Media, which would have given them control over a majority of broadcasters in Canada. Sometimes the government does the smart thing.

Weren't that funny. I wouldn't be surprised if 89x took the opportunity to build a better morning show.

This morning's show was terrible , the WRIF morning show is also getting bad....

New crtc boss is more on the side of consumers.

I highly doubt Cal Cagno is there in any form other than temporary.

WRIF strikes me as too close to the "get off my lawn" crowd. If you took the best of Dave & Chuck, and the Best of WRIF, you could have a decent show.

The rest of the Detroit shows talk about who is getting voted off of the previous nights' reality show.

I end up listening to my MP3 player on my morning commute, at least when I remember to charge it.

Yeah, heard the news Friday. I don't usually drive in the mornings anymore, but without fail whenever I listened to them I would be dying of laughter within minutes. I literally missed exits off the freeway on the way to work before I would be laughing so hard.

Drew & Mike got so boring and lame, even before Drew left for awhile. Hopefully the rumors are true and they will be somewhere else in the area. Though it is a concern as new management may not be as lenient the first time they get a pile of complaints pouring in.

Nice that they were local as well--the national shows are so boring and generic I have never found it worthwhile.

Edit: you totally missed a golden opportunity with the tags ;)

What's one of the best morning shows on terrestrial radio, at the moment? No matter where.
Looking for something to stream to get my morning going.

Yeah Drew&Mike are starting to sound like old pissed off people and they over focus on those stupid reality tv shows...

If they are anything like the morning shows here in Cleveland, with 'edgy' meaning juvenile humor full of fart, sex, and penis jokes, then I can't understand what any of you like about them.

Morning talk shows are a step down from reality TV imo, and the avid listeners even lower.

I've never enjoyed morning radio shows, possibly because I've just never heard a good one. Drew & Mike were just two crotchety old white guys that occasionally spouted off some relatively racist/insensitive stuff so I gave up on them after a week or two. Dave & Chuck The Freak were just boring from the get-go.

Luckily I haven't listened to morning radio in years so I won't be missing anything. I guess it'll be different not seeing their billboards all over Detroit. :p

Drew & Mike are who I listen to now. I'd say 8 or 9 / 10 are shows I like listening to, but this GREATLY depends on what time you listen in.

Apparently they are taking over WRIF morning show, Drew and Mike getting the boot.

Kinda makes sense.

Were silent for 6 months to let the non-compete clause expire

What I will miss about Drew and Mike is that they will get guys like Mickey Redmond on the phone and talk Red Wings for a while. If they could get Dave & Chuck to rein in the penis humor for a few minutes and work in sports and/or more local news, it could be a better show.

I'll miss Drew&Mike but they had been getting stale after all these years, anyone remember doughnut shop terrorism?

I had a feeling this was the case when they announced Drew & Mike were leaving.
