you are correct, but why "present" them to the kid at all?

He was having good natured fun, AFAIK. Too bad his Mom was so needy she started crying.

It sounded like an impromptu event. He wanted to give the kid a thrill and make him the star in front of a big crowd, if even for a couple of minutes.

Sheesh, he even offered to get the kid something more appropriate. I don't see what's wrong here.

I agree; it's just that the situation was handled awkwardly.

If you read the article carefully - the kid asked Daunte for it. I guess Daunte got put on the spot and didn't know what to do.

Probably did him a favor by taking it back. Otherwise the kid's family would be liable for a gift tax.

"Hey Daunte, can I get some of that ice?" he said in a low voice, referring to the two sparkling necklaces hanging around Culpepper's neck.

Daunte could have been like, "How about you try these on until the end of the awards?" No implication that the kid gets to keep the stuff, the kid gets the bling, and his moment in the spotlight. At the end of the awards, the kids gives the stuff back, no big deal.

Anyway, too bad that did not happen, now Daunte looks like he Indian-gave stuff to a paralyzed kid :)

he never said he was giving the kid the necklaces. it sounds like he was trying to be a nice guy by letting the kid wear his "ice" and the parents (and reporter) overracted like a bunch of dumb@sses. I can't believe this is an actual AP story.

if he let some kid drive his car, the kid probably isn't going to get to keep the car. same deal here.
