I had a hedgehog for a couple years (it was a rescue hedgehog and its age was unknown, so it likely died of old age). The previous comments on their poop are correct, its gross and smelly. But that is true of many pets. One of the most important things to do is learn how to hold it, as it does take some practice and confidence to hold a very spikey creature without hurting yourself. And the worst thing you can do is not handle it, as it will likely become anti-social and just hide most of the time.
It is an enjoyable pet though, they are really cute and once you learn how to hold them "cuddly" as well. Their underbellies are actually quite soft if you can coax it to uncurl itself.
I wouldn't recommend it as a first pet, but if you are willing to put in the time to keep it clean and cared for, it should be a very rewarding pet to have
