I would go with the Gameboy Advance Micro. Its only $40 at walmart on black friday and its TINY!

Don't listen to the old farts saying 5 is too young, I was playing NES at 4-5 and I turned out incredibly.

How about a rubix cube if you really want her to develope her mind, which i really don't think you plan to do with a psp.

Hand-helds are really bad for your eye sight, so why ruin your kid's vision this early in life so everyone can make fun of her glasses in school?

Just get her some learning board game or a puzzle, and go play outside.

Neither. As a parent, I HIGHLY recommend you get her a Leapster L-Max. It has games that are fun, educational, and appropriate for children that age. My 6 year old daughter loves hers. She calls it her GameGirl (brother has a GameBoy, hehe.) She got it for Christmas (or her birthday, don't remember which) last year to replace her worn out Leapster (original model). The L-Max is cooler because you can hook it right up to the tv so it's both a handheld for the car, and a tv machine for home. I would recommend getting the charger for it as well. I've heard nothing but bad reviews for the competing system, V-Tech.

Damn! At 5!!! Can we at least try to raise kids without an electronic babysitter??? How about some coloring books? Legos? Picture Books?

Exercise her mind a little!

I'd argue the PSP, no one is making games for the Gameboy Advance anymore and I don't recall any titles that I even wanted to play on the Gameboy Advance except metroid

My daughter was reading phonetically at about 3, due in large part by playing games on her Leapster. She didn't play it all the time, and it was usually instead of watching tv, which she didn't really want to do much at that age, or sometimes in the car (the trip to town for us is about a half hour each way). She did all of the things you mentioned as well.

It's a good thing she doesn't get car sick, eh?

Now the psp is coolest, at least i think so ... but will a 5 year old too ? Perhaps something like the gameboy and the selection of games is more her target group ?
if going for the psp theres all the versioning, dowgrading firmware and ****** to take into account as well...
If there was really good games for a 5yo on the psp .. ;)

Thoughts on the topic ?

Nintendo DS, there are age appropriate games for the system and they can help with reading and coordination skills (and if you want to dispute that, read the studies). Of course, everything is good in moderation ;)

Bill

p.s. Just got one for my 6yro and my 4yro. My 6 has been reading since about 2 1/2, my 4 hasn't show the same interest (he's more into taking things apart and putting them together). A few of the games required reading, and now he's interested in 'learning how' :)

Neither. Get her some supplies and books and start teaching her to read if you haven't already. If you have, get her some more advanced reading.

I got my daughter a GBA she loves it. but then i paid $50 for it.

you can still have her do the arts, playing outside etc. jus limit the amount of time she is allowed to play on it. my daughter gets 20 minutes a evening IF she eats all her dinner. most times she playes for 5-10 minutes then on to something else.

there's an expansion pack... it comes with maps called "playground," "soccer field," "basketball court," "woods," "fishing," "catch," and "bike riding"

Nah, the expansion pack is too difficult for a three year old. Playground is filled with new baddies like fifty year old man and bowl of antifreeze. Thus, it isn't recommended for children under the age of eight.

"Playground" is compatible with three year old when safety software "Loving Parent" is installed and running.
