Daughter leaves dementia stricken mother in maggot infested bed

http://www.seattlepi.com/local...orge01.html?source=rss

A Seattle woman has been charged with criminal mistreatment and first-degree theft after police found her dementia-stricken mother living in a maggot-infested bed.

Officers were called to the 83-year-old woman's South Seattle home in December after another relative reported that she'd been unable to reach the woman by phone. Upon entering the home, Seattle police said in court documents, the investigating officers and medical personnel were nearly overcome by the stench of urine and rotting flesh.

<...>

"I was just going to play it by ear and try and do what I could do and see how bad ? just how bad it was because I couldn't tell," George told police, according to prosecutors.

<...>

"George made numerous retail shopping purchases and Internet retail purchases which do not appear to be related to (her mother's) care," Detective Nadia Fiorini said in court documents. Most notably, George made $11,484 in ATM cash withdrawals from inside the Muckleshoot Casino in Auburn, and the Tulalip Casino in Marysville."

What she did was wrong, but taking care of a mentally ill parent is a larger burden than most would imagine.

EDIT: Damn timewarp

As disgusting as the maggots are, if she had any dead flesh, they would keep her alive by eating away the dead tissue before causing system wide sepsis.

According to police reports, paramedics found that large portions of the woman's skin had sloughed off her body. The skin appeared infected and filled with maggots.
I just threw up in my mouth a little.

So messed up, the daughter was even emptying her mom's bank accounts. Was she just hoping that her mother would die off and nobody would notice?

We had a call like that. A 500ish pound guy with bedsores so bad he was actually stuck to the mattress, it was nasty. On top of it, he was in a "packrat" house (obsessive compulsive, cant throw anything away) so we had to get him out through a trail we made.

Nasty, and that smell is something you don't forget...

Well, my yogurt isn't as tasty anymore. So glad that I put some crunchy granola in it.

At least you're not eating gnocchi in cream sauce (or would marinara be worse?)
I can't think of anything else that looks like maggots... maybe overcooked elbow macaroni

Correct. Maggots don't eat live meat. However, these aren't the sterile lab grown maggots that are used in the UK to clean gangrenous sores, so there's not telling what one could catch off them.

Yeah, you can't ever forget gangrene smells.

It have been over 20 years for me and I still recall the the stench. A 103 year old lady in the hospital that I worked in was bed ridden for most of the 2 years that she were there, and she refuse to died. Her family wanted her to be resuscitate every time even those gangrene slowly take a way her toes, feet, legs and more than 1/2 of her body.

Her family finally agree to cross out code blue after the 4th amputation that the patient lost both legs to her hip, and over 80% of her torso muscle was lost to gangrene. And, you guys don't want to know how gross it is to dress the old lady wound everyday.

That's basically torture for the family to insist she be kept alive in that condition. 🙁

Whatever you guys do, don't google image search for "hobo maggot."

You knew damn well that it would have the opposite effect. So is that hobo dead, or they cleaning him off?

if you do a regular search, you'll find a video of the same thing. It's from a TV show so it's not that bad. it could be a different guy, but same concept.
