Yes, try to wait for a $750 off $1500 if you can. I was able to get a dvd-writer, an extended battery, and an upgraded processor for cheaper that way.

You might also want to look at the 600m, but usually hear better things about the 700m.

Those Latitudes are nice if you can afford them. :thumbsup:

Beware with 600m. Went for the $750 off but had to return it: wrist area got a little bit too hot. Not exactly sure if heat was from HD or battery.

700M w/extended battery. one of the most affordable slim portables around. get at least 512 memory, buy the largest hd and fastest processor you can afford. also keep checking websites for coupon codes.

i have the 700m. Great small compact laptop. But the screen is too small to use as a main pc. Maybe if you get a extra LCD for a dual monitor setup.

I would call the IT department at your daughter's university. They can give you all the specifics about networking the laptop - e.g is wireless widely available and, if so, which particular flavor.

i reccomend the 6000 even though i have the 700m. the 6000 is only .7" wider, ~.6" deeper, and .3" thinner than the 700m with extended battery. She's going to be using the notebook as her main computer and the larger screen would be better and it has a normal sized keyboard compared with the 700m. I'd reccomend taking her to best buy to she what she would be more comfortable using; a notebook with a 12" widescreen or 15.4" widescreen.

(fyi, i have a 700m. but i would pick the 700m again because it fits my needs better than the 6000)

I'm surprised nobody here has suggested he get a Thinkpad. I've seen the new Dell's go bad really fast lately on the new 600 and 700 M series. At least with most Thinkpad T-series, you will get a standard 3 year warranty and also something that is built to last. Dell is good though, if you are really trying to stick within a certain price range.

I never even thought about desktops because I always pictured her going to library and working on papers and such. Is this correct thinking?

Even though the 6000 sounds not that much bigger on paper than the 700m I can certainly tell you it is. I've used both and the 6000 is much much much larger than the 700m and much heavier. When it comes to notebooks I am a big fan of small and light, otherwise they're not too portable (or portable but a huge pain to carry around).
