I wonder what the statistics are. I figure that if you have 4-5 partners you might stand an even chance of being infected. Of course, it depends probably some on where you are.
I think I probably was infected a long time ago. Almost no symptoms and that went away never to reappear, except that I had a sexual encounter with a woman who promptly called me and was very very angry and said I gave her herpes. I've had some affairs since and the subject never came up. I will ask my doctor if they will test me when I do my yearly blood tests.
Remember the cold sores on the band members in This is Spinal Tap. It was a gag, but that was herpes.

You can get herpes in the general area of your mouth, yes, but not genital herpes 😛 But, if you had herpes and were to "put your face" in the girl's "area," you could possibly give her genital herpes.
EDIT: And what does "only 18" have anything to do with it? I'm 18, and there are a lot of sexually active people that are younger than that. It's sad that people aren't more versed in what can happen and ways to protect themselves.

The outbreak goes away and will probably come back eventually. When you have it, you have it. You are a carrier forever. From a website I found:
"Kids who get infected with HSV-1 may get cold sores occasionally for the rest of their lives That's because even after the sores themselves dry up and go away, the virus stays in the body, waiting around for another time to come out and cause more sores. When a cold sore reappears, it is often in the same place as the previous one."
At 12ish, you should know this - at 18, most definitely you should be informed of this. And what "ew, I wouldn't be putting my face down there?" By you saying that, I'm having severe doubts that you're 18, buddy.

well problem with lots of these STDs are that most of the time they only cause serious (see cancer) problems in women. Because of this, the tests are usually made to detect it in women via pap smears and the like. Guys generally won't know they have it unless it is the bad kind because there just aren't tests for it. Wasn't there an article like two days ago on digg saying like 80% of college aged women have HPV, but only 10-15% know they have it. Apparently there are several strains that are quite benign and only 3 or 4 that cause warts, one including standard warts on your hand or feet. They also have that gardrasil thing I've seen on TV the vaccine or some junk.

And you get hsv1 on your genitals... hsv2 does not mean genital herpes.
