First of all, you're not blood related, so no law is going to have a problem with that. I don't know anything about Chinese tradition, but this isn't the best place to ask about that, anyway.

Some states let you marry 2nd cousins. If it wasn't for the wife part, then she would be your second cousin. So, you may have been ok, even then.

well, my wife is my cousin 4 generations UP removed, by up, i mean, we share a common ancestor about 22 generations up and she is 18th removed from him and i'm 22 removed from him. if you can imagine the tree. so i guess technically we are related, but the likelihood of us sharing enough genes to mean anything is virtually nill.
 
It may cause tension if you do hit it off, then it all messes up, but then there's always that risk somewhere in life.
