What exactly is the purpose of this date. I was told in the past, that this was the date that it supposedly spoiled, but have heard other things too....What's the damn deal?

Dude... milk goes sour. Not only does it go sour, but it can actually ferment and congeal into clumps. :disgust: :frown:

umm you didn't know that?
EDIT: how do you think they make cheese and yogurt?

Yes, I knew that. This guy didn't. It's pretty bad when you go to pour a glass of milk and it comes out chunky, splashing sour smelling milk all over the counter. :frown: Thank god I didn't drink straight from the carton that time... :Q 😱

Ummm.... yes I actually knew that. If you read my question, it was concerning the actual meaning of the date posted on carton. Like sold by date etc etc. duh

its the "drink it after this date and risk puking on sour milk" date

assuming your refrig is at the proper temp, do you have a refrig thermometer?

ive consumed milk well past the date on the carton - one time as long as one month after it was supposed to expire and it tasted fine (that time i didnt open it at all till that really late usage).

in general though, when i dont drink much from it, it lasts up to a week or more after the date.

Dude, did you do the spoon test at least? If you spoon can stand up on it, it's still safe to drink/eat. If you can't force the spoon in anymore, that it's time to throw it away. 😀

I prefer the date on milk jugs to be between the ages of 18 and 35; although my wife has passed the expiration date by two years, they're still holding up very well. 😉

I just checked mine.....

looks like it's a sold by date... after that, you have to taste to find out.
Oh the things that can be said about this statement....I'll hold back😉

I usually go date - 2days. The instant I catch a little wiff that smells a little funny it makes it taste funny and then I think it smells worse than it does and then I throw it out early.

I think its safe to assume she doensnt read ATOT....

I think fat content has a strong relationship with the whoaaaa
this is chunky date

I have 18%fat milk that I use for coffee and I have found that I'm
real lucky to make it to the expiry date....usually it turns a couple of days before

Whereas 2% is often good for weeks after the expiry date

milk is generally good for up to 7 days after it's posted date, HOWEVER, for every minute that the milk sits out unrefrigerated, it loses an hour's worth of shelf life. A store/grocery center usually receives milk with at least a two-week expiration date. Milk CAN be sold past the date, but it's your own fault if you neglect to look at the date printed. On a four shelf rack of milk, the freshest milk is often found on the bottom shelf in that the second from the top shelf sells the quickest.

just my $.02
